Principal's Message
January 19, 2018
Dear Willink Families,
I hope you had a great week. It was really nice to have some "normal" winter weather. I was surprised this afternoon by the need for sunglasses during dismissal as I hadn't needed those in a few weeks!
We had two amazing concerts this week along with several excellent sporting events. All of our Titan musicians and athletes have been working incredibly hard and it was fun to see them shine in their various concerts and events. If you haven't had a chance to attend either type of event, you are really missing out. Seeing kids chase their passion is one of the best parts of my job!
Out 8th grade students are very excited about tonight as we are hosting the Snowflake Semi-Formal. There was non-stop chatter about the dance during lunch today with kids talking about what they are wearing and so on. As you read this, the cafetorium is being transformed into a ballroom for the evening. The dance runs from 7:30-9:30 and tickets are available at the door. Please encourage your 8th grade child to attend! You can check out the evening as well by following us on Twitter and on the Willink webpage.
As you know, one our areas of focus is digital citizenship and helping students find balance between being online and offline. Even as adults, we can struggle with creating this balance. Earlier this week, WHEC ran a story on the importance of "unplugging". It was a strong reminder about how we need to not only teach our children about balance in terms of being online but also model that behavior. Check it out by clicking here and please talk with your children about this important topic.
The second marking period draws to a close next week. Teachers have been busily updating grades and there have been many tests and projects due this week and will be next week. Please check out your child's progress on the portal and talk with them about what they are doing well and what can be improved. If you see that your child is really struggling with their grades, reach out for help. It is never too late to set up a plan with your child's teachers and counselor which will help them get back on track!
Along this line, in the next few weeks, you will see a new feature in our newsletter. Many parents ask for help in terms of helping their students stay organized and study. Rather than try to have a workshop, we decided to start sharing tips electronically. We will be sharing strategies that our teachers use as well as various ones we find online. We hope this will help you help your children be even more successful. If you have a tip you think might help other parents, please send it my way.
Finally, all 6th and 7th grade students will be selecting courses for next year, starting on Monday. While all students will select a music class, 6th grade students also have to select a foreign language. This is a really important decision as they will be taking this language for two years and most likely, for two years in high school as well. Please review the email you received from Mrs. Anson with your child so they are prepared to select their classes.
Enjoy your weekend!
Jim
