The Beginning of Amerigo Vespucci

Amerigo Vespucci was born on March 9, 1454 in Florence, Italy. He was the third son of Nastagio Vespucci and had 4 other siblings. They were Bernardo Vespucci, Agnoletta Vespucci, Antonio Vespucci, and Gerolamo Vespucci. They were the Medici rulers of Florence through 1400’s- 1737. In his early 20’s his uncle gave him one of his first jobs. His uncle was also in charge of his education. When Vespucci was 24, he got a job as a banker in Seville, Spain. He also got a job as a merchant so, he was familiar to ships and structures before he went on expedition.

Voyages to The New World

Vespucci had many voyages through this life time. His voyages were between 1497- 1505. He had claimed that he had 4 voyages to the new world, America. His first voyage was out of the four was in 1497. In this time he had spotted a gigantic land, as known as South America. His second voyage, he wasn’t alone. He was with a Spanish explorer named Alonso de Ojeda. In 1499 their ship had traveled along the coast of, what is now Venezuela. His third voyage was with Portuguese captain named Goncalo Coelho in 1501 and 1502. They had set sail to the southern coast of Brazil. In his fourth voyage, they both went on the same journey in 1503 and 1504.

Leif Erikson or Christopher Columbus might have been the first person to set foot on America but, Amerigo Vespucci found out that this land was a new land. In 1501, he explored the southwest coast of what is now South America. The land there was bigger than anyone had thought. Columbus thought he had reached Asia but, Vespucci found out that this land wasn't Asia, it was a new world. A german mapmaker who made maps for new lands heard of Amerigo's great discovery and named the new land America in honor for him.
