Anticipatory Sets
An anticipatory set is given at the very beginning of a lesson. It’s short –only about 2 to 5 minutes, and its goal is to capture students’ attention, activate prior knowledge, and get them ready to learn. The ideas listed here can be adapted for any age and any content area.

Silent Exchange
"Silent Exchange" is easy to do and requires no prep. Students like this strategy and are eager to read the responses. The discussion at the end is usually successful.
Character Map
A CHARACTER MAP is a graphic organizer that helps students learn about a character and how the character impacts and is impacted by setting, other characters, and plot. It is used during and after reading a text. This strategy supports students’ comprehension by providing students with a framework for identifying and organizing details about a character. Reading Like a Historian
The Reading Like a Historian curriculum engages students in historical inquiry. Each lesson revolves around a central historical question and features a set of primary documents designed for groups of students with a range of reading skills.
This curriculum teaches students how to investigate historical questions by employing reading strategies such as sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading. Instead of memorizing historical facts, students evaluate the trustworthiness of multiple perspectives on historical issues and learn to make historical claims backed by documentary evidence.
