Principal's Message
Happy New Year! Our 5th graders just returned home from Science Camp, where they had a blast! Thank you to Mr. Scarson, Ms. Silva and Ms. Cooley for spending a week at camp.
There are a few important events coming up that I hope you can attend. On Wednesday, January 29th at 8:45am, we will have a Coffee Talk, where the COST team and our school counselor, Ms. Huang will be presenting. Following the Coffee Talk will be our annual Chinese New Years Parade. On Tuesday, February 4th after the SSC meeting there will be an important LCAP Meeting at 6pm. District office representatives will be facilitating this meeting to get our feedback on the district LCAP. I hope you can attend.
Today, we begin the The Great Kindness Challenge. Student Council has came up with daily challenges for the students. One easy way we can all show kindness is by greeting others when we enter a room or walk past someone. Please encourage your child to do acts of kindness at home and in the community this week and always.
Sincerely,
Ms. Johnson

Extended Absences from School
Per FUSD School Board Policy 5113.1, students who have 10 consecutive unexcused absences will be dropped from enrollment and may re enroll at FUSD Student Support Services upon their return. They will be assigned to a school with an available space at that grade level. This may not be the school they were attending before the absence.
Independent Study (IS) contract may be granted for absences between 5 and 10 consecutive days. You must apply for the contract at least 10 school days before the start of the absence. Permission to have an IS contract is at the discretion of the school and will be based on the student's academic performance and their history with previous IS contracts. Students are allowed 3 contracts during Kindergarten through 12th grade in FUSD.
No Independent Study Contracts will be granted for the first 20 days of school or the last 20 days of school.

ELPAC
The Summative English Language Proficiency Assessments for California, or “Summative ELPAC,” is the test used to measure how well students understand English when it is not the language they speak at home. Information from the ELPAC tells your child’s teacher about the areas in which your child needs extra support.
This spring, your child will take the Summative ELPAC.
Students in kindergarten through grade twelve who are classified as English learners will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English. Students are tested on their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Your child’s voice is being recorded as part of the Speaking test. A small percentage of student responses will be used to validate the accuracy of scoring and will not be used for identification. All recorded responses will be destroyed after the scores are validated.
You are an important part of your child’s education. To help your child get ready for the test, you can:
· Read to your child, or have them read to you on a regular basis.
· Use pictures and ask your child to tell you what they see, or what is happening in each picture.
· Provide your child with opportunities to use language outside of school.
· Talk with your child’s teacher about your child’s listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to help support their progress.
To learn more about the ELPAC, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
You also can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the ELPAC Web site at https://www.elpac.org/resources/practicetests/.
If you have any questions about your child taking the ELPAC, please contact
