Principal's Pen

Dear Bishop Baraga Trekkers,

Happy Monday and happy hunting for all those who are hunting this season! We pray both for your safety and for some huge bucks!

We are headed into a very busy time of the year as you are well aware. Thanksgiving is already next week and Advent begins the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 28th. It's already time to put some thought into how your family will celebrate Advent in your home. As far as school goes, we would like to prepare our building for the celebration of Advent hopefully with some help from all of you! On Saturday, November 27th, at 9:00 a.m., we will have our first school decorating session. Then on Sunday, November 28th, at 12:00 p.m. we will be having another. Parents and staff are invited to come to school and decorate for Advent and Christmas. When the students return to school on Monday they will have a wonderful surprise. Please join us!

During the weeks of Advent you will likely see things coming home from school that are Advent-themed. We try to make a clear distinction here between Advent, the time of preparing our hearts for the coming of the Christ child, and Christmas, the celebration of His birth. As you consider what to do within your home, keep in mind that this distinction is important. In these years when our children are young, we can begin traditions in our homes that last for years and years and that will always stay with our children. If you do not have specific plans for Advent, take some time to search out some ideas and start small this year. One suggestion is to start with one box labeled "Advent" for all your Advent things. This should come out each year at the start of Advent before any of your boxes of Christmas decorations. It could include things such as an Advent wreath, Jesse tree ornaments, an Advent calendar, a purple tablecloth, or any other Advent activity that you want to use to celebrate Advent in your home. If you have nothing yet to put in your Advent box, do not worry! Make it your goal to have something to put into it by the end of this Advent. Most of our churches provide some kind of Advent booklet for families to accompany an Advent prayer time each night so be on the lookout for those kinds of things to add to your box.

Today you will be receiving a letter for our Advent Prayer Exchange. Each year our students pick one special person to pray for during Advent. The students will decorate a paper ornament and mail that to the person they have chosen. Please fill out that form and return it to school by this Friday, November 19th.

Our Caught Being a Christian Award this week goes to Matthew Hanson. Matthew saved his plastic cereal bowl so that it could be recycled. He was practicing the virtue of responsibility. Great job, Matthew!

Have a wonderful week.

Veterans' Day

On Thursday, we took time to remember all our veterans and to thank God for their service and sacrifices. The 7th and 8th graders presented to the younger grades - teaching them about our military, the flag, and remembering those in our own families that have served.
