Annual Title I Parent Meeting
Open House / Curriculum Night
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Annual Title I Parent Meeting and our Open House on Thursday, September 7th. We were so happy to see such a great turnout of parents. We hope you found the evening very informational.
If you unable to attend these very important meetings, please make sure to check with your child's classroom teacher for the information that you missed. This information is intended to help you and your child have a successful year at DeKeyser Elementary.
Summer Challenge Carnival
We were beyond excited to celebrate the with all of the students who met our Summer Challenge. All students who completed their educational workbook over the summer were invited to a special "Surprise Event" Our celebratory event was the DeKeyser Carnival! The students were invited to our gymnasium for a fun-filled afternoon of friendship, teamwork, and exciting events. Thank you to Mrs. Busch for planning this AWESOME experience for our students. Thank you to the PTCG for helping us fund this wonderful afternoon. Thank you to the students and families for working so hard this summer to complete your challenge.
I can't wait to start planning the "Special Event" for next year! We hope to make this a new tradition at DeKeyser Elementary.
Please check out our DeKeyser FB page for all of the photos from the DeKeyser Carnival.
3 To Be Successful - Dolphin Cove Winners
Each day the students at DeKeyser have the opportunity to earn a "blue ticket" These blue tickets are positive 3 to Be referrals given by all staff at DeKeyser Elementary. Students never know when they may be given a "blue ticket." These tickets are given to students who are showing the 3 To Be expectations throughout the day.
All tickets are brought to the lunchroom and placed in the appropriate lunchroom buckets. Each Friday, 3 names are drawn from the bucket during the three lunches. The winners are able to visit our Dolphin Cove for a special reward. We celebrated our 1st Dolphin Cover Winners this Friday.
Congratulations to Madeline, Logan, Andy, Ben, Lindsey, Brooke, David, Emelia, and Carter. We hope you enjoy your new books! HAPPY READING!
ISM - Purposefull People
Mrs. Isaacson and Mrs. Hjelle are the new ISM teachers at DeKeyser. They will be sending home information throughout the year about the things that are happening in ISM. Your child should have brought home the following information this week. All students in K-5 go to ISM once per week. Our 6th grade students will participate in the character building and calm classroom training with their teachers. Students in the building will have the opportunity to be recognized once a month for showing exemplary behavior based on the character trait of the month.
This week in ISM we are getting to know each other and learning about kindness! We discussed what kindness looks like 👀, what kindness sounds like 👂and what kindness feels like 🤗. We are learning that we are all unique but we all belong here, together at Dekeyser!
Kindergarten
DeKeyser's Kindergarteners are off to a great start! We are making new friends, learning all about our routines, procedures and expectations! ABC Bootcamp is underway while learning about all of our new supplies. Next week, we will dive deeper into our daily schedules, iPad use, and classroom routines! It's always a great day to be a dolphin in these classrooms!
1st Grade
This week in first grade, we honed in on our school's three fundamental principles: safety, kindness, and responsibility. We reinforced these values through interactive stations, inspiriting back-to-school read-alouds and fun activities! We had a great open house, where we were able to include our students' parents in our exciting classroom developments! Next week we plan to dive further into our classroom routines and fun!
2nd Grade
Second Grade students have been learning to be a part of our "school family." They are learning the rules, routines and discussing ways we want our classroom community to feel. Second graders participated in the 3-to-Be schoolwide stations and learned what the 3-to-Be looks like in all the areas of the school. Second graders are learning about growth mindset and how having a growth mindset can help our brains stretch and grow! We are enjoying getting to know one another!
3rd Grade
3rd graders were challenged to work together to discover that math is all about patterns! Teammates took turns finding and highlighting numbers 1 to 100 in sequentially order. Afterwards we reflected on strategies that worked and ones that didn't work. Next, we will talk about a leader versus a boss. Fun was had by ALL!
4th Grade
Fourth grade started out strong! All fourth graders participated in an interactive team building activity where students got to know each other. The students are adjusting well to their schedule, new teachers, and their peers.
5th Grade
Fifth Grade- We have been working on creating our social contracts in class. This is a tool to create a positive learning culture. Students began switching classes for Writing (Mrs. Carlson), Science (Ms. Kraatz) and Social Studies (Mr. Street). We are also working on getting organized by using accordion type folders for all subject areas. We are off to a great start!
6th Grade
Sixth graders were introduced to the Building Thinking Classroom concept this week. Students are split into groups of three and are asked to solve a problem. This gives students a chance to collaborate with their peers and solve the task. Students were asked today to find every number between 1 and 20 using only 4’s and any operation.
Reminders - Important Information
Birthday Celebrations
The teachers and staff at DeKeyser strongly support and encourage the recognition of a child’s birthday during the school day. It is an annual milestone in every child’s life that should be celebrated not just at home, but in school as well, where children spend one-third of their day with teachers, classmates, and peers. While there are many wonderful and creative ways to celebrate a child’s birthday in school, birthday celebrations at DeKeyser will not include food treats. Instead, the focus at DeKeyser will be recognizing the day in a variety of special ways that do not include food treats. Some possibilities include:
· Class sings “Happy Birthday”
· Happy Birthday Recess/Gift
· Morning “Happy Birthday” PA announcement
· Parent makes a donation of book to class library/read to class
· Student reads favorite book to class
· Parent/special someone reads story to class
Your child’s teacher will have more information on how birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom. As educators, caregivers and loved ones we all want the best for our students. Thank you for joining us in giving students healthy opportunities to celebrate important events and achievements.
Too Sick To Come To School?
Take A Peek At These Health Department Guidelines
When is your child too sick to attend school? The following guidelines, along with the advice of your family doctor, will help you decide when your child should stay home:
• Cold and/or cough – a child with deep mucus that causes a cough and heavy nose drainage cannot function at school.
• Fever – fever is a warning that something is wrong. A child should remain at home for 24 hours after the fever is gone without the use of medication.
• Rash – a rash, spots or blotches on the skin can be the first sign of many illnesses. Rashes require a physician’s release stating they are not contagious.
• Stomachache/Upset – a child who is vomiting or has diarrhea should be kept at home and may return 24 hours after the symptoms are gone.
• Head Lice – a child with head lice must remain at home until treatment is complete and school officials confirm he or she is free of lice. Check your child’s head before school begins in the fall and routinely during the school year or if he or she complains of an itchy scalp. Look around your child’s ears and back of the neck for nits, which are tiny, 8 white, oval-shaped lice eggs that are attached to the hair near the scalp. Nits may look like dandruff or scalp flakes, but nits do not move and are difficult to dislodge. Notify the school office immediately if your child has head lice. Begin treatment immediately by contacting your doctor or purchasing over the counter medication from the drug store. To prevent spreading head lice, wash all infested garments, hair accessories, bedding and other surfaces with hot water and disinfectant. You must sign your child in at the office when he or she is returning to school after treatment for head lice.
Community Enrichment
EVENT: The Macomb Intermediate School District is the host site for the Macomb County Health and Wellness Fair. The fair is Saturday, 9-23-23. There will be over 55 community agencies present with information on the resources they provide. We will also have a keynote speaker talking about the Magic of Hope as well as short 30 minute presentations on various health and wellness topics.
