A Bike Chain and a Monkey's Paw?!
Continuing Literary Terms with Short Stories
Literary Terms Unit
This week we read two short stories to assist in studying our literary terms. We read "Broken Chain" by Gary Soto and "The Monkey's Paw" by W.W. Jacobs. While reading "Broken Chain" we focused on the indirect characterization that was used to describe the personalities of Ernie and Alfonso. Mood was a major topic that was discussed while reading "The Monkey's Paw". A homework assignment was sent home Thursday night to interview a family member while discussing what happened in "The Monkey's Paw". Some classes did not finish reading the text, but they were still able to complete the first section of the homework assignment. I hope your child shared with you the interesting happenings of the story!
As a way to study our vocabulary for "Broken Chain" we worked in pairs to come up with a hashtag (#) phrase to relate the word to ourselves or anything in the world. Be sure to ask your child about the hashtags they came up with. We had some interesting responses!
Read the Walls
After completing a multiple choice practice quiz, plot diagram, and characterization chart on "Broken Chain" we worked in teams to answer other questions related to the text. We were given a question with a partner or partners to answer and write the answer on a piece of paper to hang up. We then walked around the room with a handout to fill in the remainder of the answers while readings the answers that were hanging on the walls of the classroom.
We have started our usual Friday routine! Please ask your child about what our Fridays are like and also visit our webpage for more information by way of the "Fridays" tab.
