Tips for using online or electronic content:
- it's best to link to other websites or embed (instead of copying sections of information from a website)
- when referring to another person's or organisation's work or using images or video content be sure to attribute your source
- some websites will state that copying is allowed for educational purposes. The ABC Splash website is an example of a website that is freely available for teachers to use.
- look for resources that use Open Educational licenses (which reduces compliance issues and you can often repurpose this content). OER (Open Education Resources) goes hand in hand with CC licensed materials (Creative Commons); links to good sources of CC licensed materials can be found at: Where to find CC licensed materials.

Improved elibrary access via classm8, eresources, ebook signon and LEX website changes
- New Students Apps landing page via Classm8 to provide easy access to the most used Apps and to integrate access to the variety of resources via eLibrary. When students access classm8.parra.catholic.edu.au, once they login they will be directed to the Student Apps landing page for easy access to Mail, Drive/Docs, Sites, Blogger and eLibrary.
- Single sign on for CEDP student ebook platform (Wheelers). Recently the CEDP student eBook platform sign on feature changed to what is called SAML (single sign on). What this means is that, if a user is already authenticated on the CEDP network, when they select sign on in the eBook system, it will pass them straight through to the platform without having to sign on again.
- New eResources database page with updated interfaces. EbscoHost databases has added a number of additional interfaces called Explora which replaces the Student Research Centre and as a result the eResources database page has been updated to reflect this. You can see the new eResources page live via elibrary or snet.parra.catholic.edu.au.
- Learning Exchange - website improvements. The Learning Exchange website has been upgraded with a new fresh look and more streamlined features for improved access to content. Visit it at http://learningexchange.nsw.edu.au/

Final thoughts...
During the break I listened to an interesting talk about Google. We rely on Google for many services, both in the delivery of education and our day-to-day work and in our personal lives. In relation to research and the internet, I think that it is important to be constantly mindful of the Google business model and that Google is an advertising company, not a search engine (despite the fact that the word 'google' has become synonymous with 'search'). Google make their money through search and by bringing advertising to us as a result. This has many implications. The way businesses such as Google and Facebook provide access to information (they both have different business models) raises ongoing issues relating to what information we have access to and privacy issues. It's also interesting to note that Google searching is 'website' or content related but we can already see how traditional search is changing through the use of social media and the new, creative content generated by individuals. Having a presence on social media (such as Twitter and Facebook) is important as what you like, tweet and so on impacts on the results of what others see. Not only that, I'm sure that many of you have found that the valuable information and knowledge you have gathered in the last few years or even more recently, is possibly from people you are connected with via social media, not necessarily from something you found by doing a 'google search'. I think that's something worth reflecting on.
Thanks for reading to the end of this newsletter!
All the best for Term 3,
Nancy
