Geography Key Stage One
In this unit of work your child will learn the following:
- To be able to use a world map to name and locate continents, water masses and countries.
- To understand the geographical similarities and differences of locations.
- To be able to identify seasonal and daily weather patterns.
- To be able to locate hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the equator and North and South Pole.
This is a picture of a boy called Judah and a girl called Reenie.

Where is Papua New Guinea?
Papua New Guinea is a country near Indonesia and Australia. It contains the east half of New Guinea island and some more nearby islands. The capital city of Papua New Guinea is Port Moresby.
What is the weather like here?
Papua New Guinea's climate can be described as tropical climate, with the coastal plains averaging a Temperature of 28°C, the inland and mountain areas averaging 26°C, and the higher mountain regions, 23°C.

The stars in the shape of the Southern Cross shows that the country is in the Southern Hemisphere. The bird of Paradise is a native bird.
Where is Cardiff?
Cardiff is the capital city of Wales which is a country in the United Kingdom, bordered with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Wales has its own language and its capital city is Cardiff. It is a country famous for its hills and mountains with Mount Snowdon being the highest and most well-known peak.
What's the weather like?
Wales tends to be wetter than England, with slightly less sunshine. Temperatures in the coastal areas, however, can be very warm in summer ranging from 15°C (59°F) to rare highs of around 25°C (77°F).
The red dragon flag
The Welsh flag is a red dragon with a green and white background. Wales is a very old country and the flag represents its Roman and Tudor history.

Quick study
Look at a world map online or in an atlas.
Find the two places where the children live. Notice how far away from each other they are?
- What are the names of the surrounding waters? (Seas, channels, oceans?)
- What are the names of the continents where the two children live?
- What are the names of the two countries where the two children live?
Activity One
- Draw a detailed picture of Reenie in a lesson at school.
- Draw a detailed picture of Judah in a lesson at school.
- Write about which school you would prefer and why? What makes them different? What is similar?
Activity Two
- Draw a detailed picture of Reenie on the beach with her family.
- Draw a detailed picture of Judah on the beach with her family.
- Write about which beach you would prefer and why? What makes them different? What is similar?
Activity Three
- If you went on holiday to Port Moresby – what things would you pack? Write a list of them.
- If you went on holiday to Cardiff - what things would you pack? Write a list of them.
Activity Four
- Record a weather forecast for Port Moresby.
- Record a weather forecast for Cardiff.

Activity Five
Click on the links to look up and listen to the two National Anthems of the countries:
- How do they make you feel?
- Can you join in with them?
- Can you make a dance to them?
Activity Six
It can be dangerous in the city where Reenie lives. The very wet season causes floods, the very hot season causes drought and the city has a lot of criminals - especially at night. Write a prayer to thank God for the people of both countries and ask for his protection on Reenie.
Activity Seven
Design a postcard - both front and back, that you could send to a friend if you were on holiday in Port Moresby.
Activity Eight
Write a letter to either Reenie or Jude, telling them about where you live. Tell them about what your house, school and village is like. Compare it to theirs. Tell them what you like to do at the weekends or what you play with your friends.
Activity Nine
In both places, there were buildings on stilts. Why do you think these buildings were made like this?
Make a model of a building on stilts. You will have to work out how to make those long legs strong enough to support the building. be careful what you use.
