Highlights of the week
As always, it has been a wonderful week in Prep2, full of excitement and fun as the children dive into the unit of Water World. They have been conducting experiments with water, learning about solids, liquids and gases and discussing the importance of water for all living things around the world.
In Mathematics, we have continued to explore number bonds with children; challenging themselves to 20! They are using their mental maths skills by working out sums out in their head. Test them at home!
In Language Arts, we have continued our learning on 'illustrations' and author studies' in Writers Workshop as the children look deep into the Mo Willems books. They are grasping the concepts of speech bubbles and being very creative with their illustrations as they create their own fantastic stories. It's wonderful to see their enthusiasm and dedication as they develop their skills of an author.
After a very busy few weeks with Maths week, entry points and celebration of learning, the children have been practising peacefulness through quiet dear time and small group activities, using their learning voices.
Another highlight of this week was the enthusiasm, passion and dedication that the Edible Garden team showed in harvesting the wonderful herbs and fruits in the garden and selling them at our first Edible Gardens Market. It was an outstanding success, raising $180 which will now be used for future edible garden projects and equipment. Many thanks to Mrs Joplin, Ms Koh, Mrs Renuka and the Edible Garden team for your commitment and enthusiasm in this project.
We would also like to acknowledge the parents contribution to their children's school life, especially through mystery readers. It is always always lovely having you in to read to the children :)
The children continue to develop their writing conventions through journal writing. It's lovely to hear and read all the exciting things they get up to over the weekend.
We can see a great improvement in reading through our daily Language Hour activities. As we continue to revise set 4 and set 5 sounds (ai, j, oa, ie, ee, or,) next week, please play word bingo, blending activities, spelling bee and CVC word making games. Have a look on starfall.com for great 'learning to read' activities.
We are continuing to work with 'Stretchy Snake' and 'Chunky Monkey' during dear group reading times. Ask your child to show you how at home.
Learning number bonds has been a fantastic starting point to teach the children the concept of adding. Next week, we will look at general addition to 10 and 20 and begin to solve worded problems.
Your home is full of opportunities to explore Maths with your child, and at the same time, build their self-confidence and understanding of mathematical ideas. You can create opportunities for you and your child to 'talk maths' discreetly through general day to day routines in the house e.g when cooking, ask your child to bring 2 tomatoes and 5 apples then ask them to tell you how many there are altogether.
Virtue of the week
This week we have been practising the virtue of Truthfulness.
Next week we will be looking at the virtue of Peacefulness which we think this is a great virtue to end the term on. Peacefulness is a way of approaching conflict with others so that no one is made wrong. It is being fair to others and yourself. We will be practising an inner sense of calm through reflection and gratitude.
