Kindergarten News ACES
Week Of January 2nd
Highlights from last week....
Happy New Year!! Can you believe that it is January already? We hope you all had a wonderful vacation. We will have a small holiday party when we return. We are ready to get back to school and get back to our daily routines. We are planning on really pushing our friends from now until the end of the year to be the best learners they can be.
Before vacation, we were working on the following areas:
In Phonics, we reviewed the sight words that we learned so far and practiced "tapping" out words. The children are doing so well with this skill.
In Reader's Workshop, we learned a strategy of using the picture and matching the first letter.
In Writer's Workshop, we learned how to write book reviews by writing our opinions. The children LOVE this!!
In Math, we continued our unit on measurement. Our focus was on weight. We used our balance scales and compared weight by using the words "heavier" and "lighter". The children loved using the scales on their own to practice this skill.
A peek at our learning this week....
In Phonics, we will review the words we have learned up until this point, please continue to practice these words. The more they know, the better reader's they will be. This week we will practice tapping out words and working on the correct letter formation of all the upper case letters.
In Reader's Workshop, we will work on the strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?" Because this is a newly introduced skill, we will be working on this skill for a few weeks before we can move on. If your child masters this skill before we move on, we will work with them independently to challenge them at their level.
In Math, we working on capacity and comparing numbers.
In Science, we will start our unit on living and nonliving things.

CONFERENCES
Parent conferences will be January 9th.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
Many parents are asking what the class needs for supplies. We could use some Clorox Wipes and paper towels. Thank you in advance.

Please practice letters and sounds with your child nightly! Thank you!
Notes from Mrs. Maillet
Notes from Mrs. Goldthwaite
One of our classmates had heart surgery before our holiday break. So happy to say that she is doing great and will return this week half days. We will need to support her and help her with things around the room.
Some of our groups have changed and I am looking forward to the growing we are going to do as a class.
Reminder please send in extra shoes so your child can change shoes. It is not good to wear outside winter boots all day.
If you would like to volunteer in our room please let me know. Just another set of hands is always a big help.
I am truly excited to be back to learn more from your children and to teach things that they might not know.
Thank you for all the support you give at home. Mrs. Goldthwaite
Notes from Mrs. Potter
Just a reminder, we will do our holiday book swap tomorrow! :)
I hope that everyone had a nice holiday and enjoyed the week home from school. We have been working so hard and will hopefully be able to pick right back up from where we left off before break!
Thank you to Mrs. Richards for volunteering in our room!
Please remember to label all winter gear if possible! We have a nice pair of black snowpants that were left in the room before break and no one claimed them!
Notes from Mrs. Marcoux
We will have our book swap tomorrow!
Please remember to dress your children for the extremely cold weather! If you need any help to obtain the winter gear, please let me know.
Parent conferences will still be held on January 9th.
Keep warm!
Mrs. Marcoux
Notes From Miss Driscoll
With the Winter months upon us, please be aware that in order for your child to play in the snow they must have all five of the following things; jacket, snow pants, boots, gloves and a hat. If your child doesn’t want to play in the snow please be sure they still have warm clothes to be outside in. If these things are a hardship for your family, please let me know.
Please remember that if you had previously chosen a conference time in December, next Tuesday, January 9th will be the rescheduled date.
I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday break!
