Using the TEKS Resource System
The Instructional Focus Document (IFD) is the document that provides a bridge between the curriculum, assessment and instruction. It is an incredibly valuable piece of the TEKS Resource System! I love the IFD because it provides an overview of the unit and the performance assessments so you can "begin with the end in mind". The IFD also includes the overarching concepts, the unit concepts, misconceptions, vocabulary, bundled TEKS with targeted specificity and ELPS.
You should use the IFD to:
- determine what content should be taught in each grading period
- organize and plan medium to short term high quality instruction
- determine unit learning objectives and focused learning experiences
- select instructional resources and materials that are aligned with the specific TEKS
- maintain focus on the TEKS while planning and implementing instruction
As an administrator, I like the IFD because it provides a quick overview of what should be happening when I review your lesson plans, conduct walk-throughs or do a formal observation. I know exactly which vocabulary words should be posted and used by you and your students. I know what the end goal of your lesson is because I've reviewed a sample assessment. I am aware of the misconceptions that students might have so I can watch for how you address them.
I will continue to share this message all year long, Your job is hard enough without trying to teach last year's curriculum and next year's curriculum while also teaching this year's. Teach your curriculum!
