Metropolitan areas have overlapped because of urban growth
In the United States, the central city and the surrounding built-up suburbs are called an urbanized area. Approximately 70 percent of Americans live in urbanized areas, including about 30 percent in central cities and 40 percent in surrounding jurisdictions.

The term city defines an urban settlement that has been legally incorporated, self-governing unit.
