REMINDERS
Report cards are coming home today! Please sign and return the envelope. Please keep the contents of the envelope for your records.
Report Cards
Please be aware that the level of difficulty in all subject area will increase. Students will be expected to read at a level D by the end of the year and also be able to write 3-5 sentences about a topic. Students need to know their sight words quickly in order to be more successful in reading and writing.
Teachers are eager to discuss your child's progress with you at the February conference. Meanwhile, you can check your child's progress by looking at the work in his/her folder and going over it with your student at home. Please continue to read with your child and monitor your child's progress. Thank you so much for your help with your child's learning at home.
Next week, we are learning...
In reading, we will focus on retelling stories. When we retell, we talk about the characters, setting, and major events in the story. It will be so helpful for your child to retell a story to you every night. Don't stop there, though! Your child can also practice retelling after watching a television show or movie!
For Writer's workshop, students are composing informational texts. We are teaching students to write about topics they know about and are encouraging the to use their sight words in their writing. Teachers will begin to collect writing samples to show you at the February conference.
In math we will continue discussing and learning about 2D and 3D shapes. It is important that students begin to recognize shapes in the world.
In social studies, we will be learning all about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. Kindergarteners will need to be able to tell someone that MLK believed that all people should be treated the same and that he was from Atlanta. We will also learn more about American symbols.
Next week students will be assessed in how they hear short vowel sounds in words, as well as their knowledge of basic shapes and 3-D shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube)
Vowel Sounds and CVC Words
We are introducing long vowel sounds as well and are practicing hearing the differences in words. Example: Bat vs. beet.
Waterford Early Learning Software
Students are logging into the Waterford Learning program daily at school. They can access this program through their GCPS E-Class page. The experience is personalized for each child and is meant to be completed individually. Students are expected to complete one 15 minute session each day in Reading during their center time and will be going to the computer lab as a class at least once a week to complete a 30 minute session in math/science. This program provides the classroom teacher with personalized information regarding each child's program including strengths and weaknesses, as well as reports that can be shared with parents at conferences.
We ask that students do not access their Waterford program at home and it should only be used at school. We ask that you and siblings not assist your child in answering questions as this will move them through the program at a faster rate than is appropriate for their learning as well as make it too difficult to be completed independently at school.
