Classroom Management Philosophy
In the theatre classroom, it is vital to keep a person-centered environment to facilitate higher achievement, and to have more positive learning environments with stronger teacher–student relationships rather than teacher-centered or traditional classrooms. We'll revolve around four pro-social learner dynamics that a person-centered classroom management program emulates. These include an emphasis on social-emotional learning, connectedness within the school community and culture, a positive school and classroom climate, and especially student self-discipline.
This classroom is already a different environment than your student’s english, history, or biology class– we are hands-on by creating and building, discussion based by critiquing and analyzing, and we utilize performance and presentation as a medium for assessments.
Theatre is an art form that feeds off of human connection and exploration. Lessons will revolve around the student’s practical skills learned in class and artistic discussions that students moderate based on what we are learning. Thus, feedback from peers, myself, and the student’s self-evaluation are critical in developing their craft. These tactics will lead to higher achievement not only in the theatre classroom, but all other classes and also prepare students for a plethora of fields due to our creative, collaborative, and person-centered nature.
"The mission of the theatre, after all, is to change.
To raise the consciousness of people to their human possibilities."
-Arthur Miller
Teaching Philosophy
My theatre practice is integral to my pedagogy. If I am not constantly striving to practice modern theatre to bring into the classroom, I am not serving my students to the best of my ability.
In the classroom, I recognize the complex identities of my students and foster a space where everyone is welcome and seen for who they are. I directly address issues of identity, race, culture, and diversity through the material I select and the topics I bring to my classes to ensure that every student is able to relate to their classwork on a personal level.
A warm welcome..
