What Are We Tweaking and Tuning This Week?
We have had such a great two days starting school. It has been so good to see everyone back. I wanted to make sure you knew about a few things we are adjusting and improving especially at our arrival and dismissal times. 1. The gate at the Caswell Entrance is open for drop off for elementary students only in the morning. Be sure to stop at the stop sign. Please also remember that there is no right turn to go into the Sullivan Parking Lot. (That could cause a wreck.) If you are dropping off a middle school student as well, please go through the Sullivan drop off line first and then come through the Cherry Park line to drop off your elementary child. For safety reasons, Sullivan students should be dropped off only in their car line. 2. The gate at the Caswell Entrance will be closed at 7:45 each morning. Students arriving after that time will need to go through the Sullivan car line. All students should be arriving by 7:40 and in their seats by 7:45. Students are late at 7:45 and need to be signed in at the main office. 3. At the Cherry Road Entrance, Friday will be last day to park in the that lot and walk students over to building (unless you have an appointment or there is a scheduled event). (See more info below about Independence Day on Friday.) The most safe way for your child to arrive at school each day is dropping off in the car line. In addition, walking children over two lanes of traffic slows down the car line. The same is true for walking over Cherry Road. By the end of last year, there was little to no traffic after 7:40 in the morning. We will continue to get better and better each day. 4. We are putting into place a new procedure for the Cherry Road Entrance at dismissal time. Parents will be given a number (1-13) where you will pull up and stop. Safety Patrol will have the number to show you. (#1 is closest to the entrance and #13 is closest to Caswell Street.) Your child will be told to meet you at that pickup number. If your child does not come, pull down to me and then to the left and we will get your child. Please encourage your child to listen (on the inside) to his/her name and number called. Know that we will be working with our kids so they know exactly what to do. Today, we finished 15 minutes earlier than yesterday and I am sure it will get better and better. 5. After Friday, if you arrive after 7:45 at the Cherry Road Entrance, you will need to go around the school to the Main Entrance off of Caswell Street to sign in your child. Please take note of what time you are arriving the next few days. You may want to back up your time five minutes or so if you are cutting it close. For all parents, know that you can drop off (or pick up) children at any grade level at the Caswell Entrance. Sometimes it can be a little quicker there. If you change where you are picking up your child, be sure you inform your child's teacher and get the correct color pickup card. Our goal for you is to make sure you know what adjustments you might need to make so we can keep our students safe and maximize our teaching and learning time. As promised, we are getting better each day as all of us know the procedures and get used to them.
Mr. Maness, Principal
Independence Day Is This Friday
Starting Friday, we want all of our students walking in by themselves. Just like we have done all this week, we will have adults in the halls to help make sure our children know where to go. Especially for our kindergarten students, we want them to know that they can "do it" all by themselves. For safety and security reasons, Thursday will be the last day parents can walk their children to their classrooms and Friday will be last day that parents should walk their children to the door. Know that our Safety Patrol kids will assist as well in helping children get out the car and on their way. After Friday, if adults need to come into the building, they will need to check in at the main office. If you wonder if they can "do it," I promise you they can. Please help your child be ready for this step of independence.
Helping Our New Teachers
- Bedroom furniture such as a night table and a dresser. A shoe cabinet or similar would also be great.
- A coffee table and a TV stand for the living room.
- Any type of lamp would be appreciated.
- Armchairs
- Bar stools
- A dinning table and chairs would also be really helpful.
- A small cabinet or drawer for the bathroom.
As we become aware of other needs of our new teachers, we will keep you informed.
