December Elk Trax
2022-2023 National School to Watch
From The Principal:
Dear EMS Families,
Tis the Season... and at Elkton Middle the season is full of great things! First of all, our Day of Service on November 22 was great! We had several students who planned a volunteer activity outside of the school on their own, we had each grade level on field trips of service planned by the teachers, and we had some students at the school providing volunteer work. It was a great day! I want to personally thank each of you for this! I feel it is important to teach our youth to have a servant mind and heart! I appreciate all of you for helping with this and for the kind notes about the activity. I hope we continue this in the years to come, as we did pre-COVID days.
We have a busy month before winter break! Our interim reports will be ready for access on Monday, December 5- can you believe we are halfway through the nine weeks already? Please make sure you access your child's PowerSchool on December 5 to check interim grades. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child's teachers.
Coming up on December 7 we will have a Student Spotlight with our Fine Arts Department at EMS. Come out and see the great things happening with these programs. I was impressed with the vertical concert at ERHS last week with band and chorus. I want to thank Ms. Fulton for her leadership of our music program, our kids are having a great time and making great music!
Lastly, our winter break will be December 23-January 2, 2023. I hope each of you have a great holiday season filled with joy and love! We will be back in school on Tuesday, January 3 ready for the new year of 2023!
Emily Holloway, Principal
A Message From Michelle Campbell, Assistant Principal
It is hard to believe we are already in December. December is such a wonderful time to think of others and give back to the community. Winter sports have also officially begun! Check out our Winter Athletic Schedule and come cheer on your fellow Elks in Boys' basketball, Girls' basketball, Cheerleading, and Wrestling. We also have some great events being put on by Fine Arts and clubs that continue to meet. There are many things to get involved in and we love seeing our Elks engaged in so many different things at EMS.

A Note From Krystal Muterspaugh, Assistant Principal
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is enjoying the holiday season. We have a lot going on here at Elkton Middle School this month. We have wrestling, boys and girls basketball starting this week, our student showcase on December 7th, and both Elkton and Grottoes town parades. We hope to see you at some of these events! December is a short but exciting month, I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season.

Nurse Clinic News
I hope you were able to enjoy some time off for resting, relaxing and being thankful. Continue hanging in there as we’re moving right along into a short but exciting month. December is one of my favorite times of the year with decorating, spending time with family, baking, and celebrating the season.
Continue to get plenty of rest, eat well, stay hydrated and take care of yourself as we’re still seeing a lot of sickness going around. Please continue to check your child before sending them to school each day and call the office to let our staff know if they will be out or send an attendance email.
7th grade parents and all new students had vision and hearing screenings done. If your student failed you will be getting a letter sent home to let you know this. Some students forgot their glasses and need to be re-screened. Please remind them to bring their glasses and be rechecked before being failed due to not having their glasses with them on that day. They have been reminded of this several times. Once your child has been evaluated by an eye doctor please let the nurse know so that can be documented in their record. (This information is ONLY for those students who receive a letter stating they failed one of the screenings)
If you have any questions or concerns for the nurse feel free to call the school 8:30-4 @ 540-298-1228.
Time is flying by!! Before we know it we’ll be heading into the New Year!
Nurse Julie

Career Exploration
Your student has begun an exciting journey of career exploration with a new resource available to RCPS students - Major Clarity. This platform, accessed through Clever, is an engaging way to participate in this process. So far, students have learned how to log in and completed an assessment related to their personality and career types that may be a good fit for them. Each week in Advisory we are having Career Thursdays.
If you're curious about what your student is doing, feel free to ask them to show you using their Chromebook. Here is a video from MajorClarity that explains their platform: Major Clarity Parent Video.
Here is an article that explains a little bit more about the Personality Assessment that your student took.
Please feel free to contact your School Counselor, Laura Ogden, at logden@rockingham.k12.va.us or (540) 298-1228 with any questions.
