A Message from the Principal
Lauren Meeks
Mustang Pride!
Thank you all so much for a wonderful nacho lunch! The Parkside staff is always so appreciative of our volunteers who shower us with love...and food :)
We had a great week full of laughter, love, and learning! From math tools to making predictions and living vs. non-living things to writer's workshop, our students are proving to be enthusiastic learners!
During our classroom walkthroughs this week we have seen kids writing about people they love, places they've been, and activities they do on weekends. They have taken ownership of their learning by adding important details to their pieces and getting peer feedback to make their writing even better. Wow! We are so impressed! Ask you child what they have been writing about this week!
Come walk with your Parkside student in the Rouse Homecoming parade! Join us as we show our school spirit in support of Rouse High School on Wednesday, Sept. 25th. Bring the whole family in Parkside colors - your favorite school t-shirt, tutu's, crazy socks, pom poms, posters, and anything else you think might make your Mustang gallop through the parade. All students must be accompanied by an adult and should meet Mrs. Meeks and staff at 6:00pm near the main entrance to Rouse HS (parking is in the student lot by the tennis courts). Pick-up will be back at the flag pole near the main entrance of Rouse High School as soon as the parade is over. The parade is followed by the presentation of the Homecoming Court and fireworks at the football field. Hope to see you there!
We hope you all have a great weekend!
Lauren, Maggie, & Erin
A Note from Nurse Caitlin
Dear Parents/Guardians of 5th grade girls:
Our school will do spinal screenings on 10/7-10/8. State law says that schools must screen female students for spinal problems at age 10 and 12 or the fall semester of grade 5.
Important Recommendations:
· All students will have to remove their shirt for the exam.
· Girls should wear a sports bra or two-piece swimsuit top.
If you do not wish to have your child screened for religious reasons, you must submit an exemption to the school no later than 9/30/19. Please refer to the email from your child’s teacher for more information. Thank you for your cooperation and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Nurse Caitlin
ADAPT (Alcohol Drug Awareness & Prevention Team) Lessons
All students in Kindergarten – 5th grades will receive instruction and information on drug awareness required by the State Health TEKS from the P.E. teacher and/or ADAPT Counselor October 16th & 17th.
Please preview the parent information at: https://tinyurl.com/yxr9san4
The parent information includes title and links to the videos, which will be shown and has follow-up discussion questions for you to ask your child. You may preview videos the students will be watching by contacting the campus P.E. teacher before October 16th.
Invention Night
Parkside PTA is gearing up for Invention Night, and to make this event a success, we need your help! To make sure we have enough food and supplies for everyone attending, we ask that you fill out the Invention Night RSVP by clicking on this link. It will take less than a minute to complete!
Once you have RSVP'd, please download the following apps on your phone:
Little Bits
After you install the app, open the app and enter a nickname and parent email address to enter the app. Then, click on Base Inventor Kit to download the different inventions you can make using this kit. As a family, scroll through the different invention ideas and download the invention your family decided to make at the event. If you can't decide, you may download more than one.
Quiver
This app will let you participate in the 3D augmented reality coloring page activity. Just install the app on your phone and you're done!
Thank you! By doing this ahead of time, it will save your family time at the event so that you can immediately start inventing!
Destination Imagination
Does your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade child like to build, design, invent, create, perform, and work with a team to solve challenges?
If so, he or she might be interested in participating in Destination Imagination (DI). Have them stop by Mrs. Gilbert's room (1317) to pick up a registration form. You can also find the form ATTACHED if you'd like to print it, complete the form, and return to Mrs. Gilbert.
Please know this is NOT for QUEST students only, nor is it a QUEST run program. We've currently had over 20 forms turned in and only ONE parent volunteer to manage a team. A team typically has 5-7 members. We MUST have parent volunteers to manage a team.
Common questions I've received:
- When will meetings be? How often? Where will they take place? When do they start?
- How much does it cost?
Make sure to sit down and complete the entire form together and turn it in to Mrs. Gilbert no later than Friday, September 20th. If you would like more information regarding DI, HERE is a link to a presentation full of DI information. If your child is not sure what challenge they're interested in, HERE is a link to the challenge previews.
This video gives a great summary of what DI is all about: https://youtu.be/dntLYGIXAdU
Email Lindsey Gilbert at lindsey.gilbert@leanderisd.org if you have any questions regarding DI.
