Report Cards
Chimacum Elementary is committed to partnering with you to increase academic achievement, attendance, and to promote a safe and effective learning environment for all our students. We report the academic achievement and progress with you over the course of the year by communicating with you as follows:
- November - Parent/Teacher Conferences
- November - Progress Reports
- February - First Semester Report Cards
- April - Parent/Teacher Conference
- April - Progress Reports
- June - Second Semester Report Cards
You recently received your child's first semester's report card. We report to you using a number system to provide you information about the specific skill areas your child is progressing towards mastering. The performance levels we use to report student progress are:
- 4: Student is performing above grade level
- 3: Student is performing at grade level
- 2: Student is performing below grade level standard
- 1: Student is performing well-below grade level standard
How is the performance level determined?
Performance levels represent how much a student has learned in relation to an end-of-year standard and achieving year-end content standards. Teachers use multiple assessment measures including the Measurement of Student Progress (MAP), Fountas & Pinnell reading, State assessments, and classroom-based assessments from grade level curriculum to determine performance levels. Performance levels help teachers find gaps in learning and focus their instruction to meet individual students' needs and learning styles.
Please feel free to let your child's teacher know if you have any questions regarding the report card.

Counselor's Corner
Hello from the Counselor’s Corner!
Communication is the cornerstone to success in life. In my Second Step lessons I teach in grades K-5, we are discussing the importance of assertive, respectful language when asking for support. Students have been getting the opportunity to practice role playing so they can achieve a sense of mastery. The social emotional curriculum I teach also helps students learn to regulate their emotions by using a stop message, naming their emotion and using the calm down steps. These steps are: breathing, counting, and using positive self-talk to decrease stress. Please ask your students about these important skills.
All students have received the Bully Prevention unit where they learn how to recognize bullying, report and refuse. An important part of this is being a responsible bystander who can speak up for someone being bullied. Students have also had an opportunity to role play these skills and practice.
If your child is struggling at school with his or her relationships with others, please let me know. My role as school counselor is to help decrease any stressors that get in the way of a student’s learning. I feel honored to be able to teach our students these skills and build their confidence. Please do not hesitate to give me a call. I will be offering 6-8 week lunch groups in Emotional Regulation, Friendship Skills, Worry Warriors, and Divorce Group. These groups will be separated by age group. Students will need to get a permission form to participate. Please call if you have any questions.

A Message from our Behavior Specialist
To continually improve our school climate, we work together using a program called PBIS, Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports. This program establishes a positive culture throughout our school. PBIS improves social, emotional and academic outcomes for all students. If students need some additional support to work toward making good choices in all of those areas, they become a part of the goal-oriented Check In, Check Out System. In this system, each student, along with their teacher, develops 3-4 individual behavior goals they will work on throughout the year. Those goals are discussed and the card goes with them to their class. Their teacher reminds the student of their goals during the day and assesses their progress toward meeting those goals. At the end of the day, the card is returned, and their progress is discussed and recorded. Rewards are given for a successful day of meeting their goals.
Every day is a new opportunity! If you have any questions about the work of your Behavior Interventionist, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time. You can email me at jenny_vervynck@csd49.org. I look forward to hearing from you!
