Measurement Olympics
Dear Second Grade Parents,
Second Grade is excited to have our fourth annual Measurement Olympics on Friday, May 4th.
Moms, dads, grandparents...anyone willing to help with a measurement station is more than welcome to join us that day! We will need you to arrive between 8:20 and 8:25. All volunteers must have completed a background check and be an approved volunteer. If you have not completed a background check you probably have time to get it done if you fill it out in the next couple of days. If you would be willing to help us out that morning, please let me know by replying to this email. We estimate the event to last until 10:30 or so.
We are currently working on our Measurement unit and this will be a fun event to let the students show what they have learned.
Thanks for all of your support!
Are you returning to Barksdale?
FIELD DAY
Barksdale is Getting a New Look!
We have exciting news to share with you!
Barksdale is going to get a whole new look for the 2018-2019 school year! Recently the Plano ISD School Board approved the budget for refurbishment. Some of the things that you will see are full renovation of the kitchen, new flooring throughout the building, upgraded teachers’ lounge and workroom, new metal student lockers, all new cabinetry, new furniture throughout the building, fresh paint, new playgrounds, upgrades to the HVAC units, chillers, boilers, electrical, plumbing, and more. There will also be two additional classrooms added due to our projected enrollment. Construction on the two new classrooms will begin shortly. Teachers are busy cleaning out their classrooms after school and on the weekends, as everything in the entire school has to be removed starting June 1. We could not be more excited to see the new look, but we do know that we will have to make adjustments along the way. We will continue to update you throughout this process. Please know that none of this will impact your child’s learning this school year. They will begin working on everything over the summer, with the exception of the two new classrooms.
Seasonal Allergies Tips from Nurse Ericka
If you know your child has severe seasonal allergies and needs to take medication, please try to give it to them at home to avoid worsening of symptoms at school. Seasonal allergy symptoms can include red/itchy eyes, watering of eyes, eye swelling, sore throat, runny noses, and sneezing.
It is important to try to avoid allergy triggers by following some basic steps: keeping windows closed at home, turn on the A/C and change filters as needed, shower and wash hair after being outside, washing clothes and sheets often to get rid of allergens, and using allergy relief medications such as antihistamines or other medications that may be recommended by your physician. Many of these medicines can be taken at home once or twice a day. Please note: It helps to reduce the severity of symptoms by starting medication about a month before pollination occurs and to take medication regularly. Please talk to your physician about what would be best for your child and remember that a medication request form is required from the parent and a physician’s order to give medications at school. In the nurse’s office, I can rinse eyes if necessary with tap water and give ice packs to apply to irritated eyes.
