February is also Black History Month.
Learn why Black History month is celebrated in February. Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month. Here are 10 fun facts to get kids learning about the contributions of Black Americans to American History.
- Mansa Musa is the richest person in history with a net worth of $400 Billion.
- George Crum was a chef that invented the potato chip in 1853.
- Sarah Boone invented the first portable modern day ironing board.
- Lonnie G. Johnson is an Aerospace Engineer that invented the famous Super Soaker Water Gun.
- Philip Downing designed the first mailbox. He created a metal box with four legs, which he called the letter box. It was a predecessor to the mailbox.
- Charles Drew was a surgeon that developed a way to process and store blood plasma in “blood banks” that saved people’s lives. His blood bank was adopted by the Red Cross.
- Jacqueline Davidson (my college roommate) is an attorney who became one of the highest ranking women in the NFL when she was named as the Chief Negotiator for the New York Jets Professional Football Team.
- Sarah Goode invented a folding cabinet bed that could go against the wall into a cabinet or a desk with compartments for stationary and writing supplies. She became the first African American woman to receive a United States patent.
- Benjamin Banneker made the first clock, authored a series of almanacs, and helped design Washington DC.
- Lewis Latimer worked for Thomas Edison when he invented the light bulb. Latimer invented the carbon filament that made the light bulb brighter and last longer.

Open Enrollment
During the months of January and February, there is open enrollment at all schools throughout the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. Families are welcome to visit all schools throughout the district and Monte Vista welcomes all students, TK through 5th grade to join our Monte Vista where students thrive and reach their potential with the care and support of outstanding teachers and staff. Monte Vista Elementary School is offering tours on the following dates listed below.

PTA Updates
Parent Teacher Association
- We will host a Monte Vista skate night at Cal Skate on March 16.
- PTA will be hosting an adult casino night with dinner, cocktails and a silent auction on April 14, 2023. Stay tuned for more information and ticket sales.
- Keep a look out for another spirit wear sale.
- Monte Vista is looking for someone or a group of people to do yearbook. Please notify the office or the principal if interested.
- As many of you have heard our beloved office secretary Jean Maybury has retired. PTA will be collecting letters and notes from students and parents and will turn them into a book to give to her. Please bring anything you would like to make for her to your child’s teacher by February 3rd. Thank you.
