ABERDEEN RACING ACADEMY
November 2017 Edition: Newletter 8
INTRODUCTION
The Academy has been a little quieter over the last few weeks with few regattas however, both teams having been preparing for the build-up to the Christmas period which will soon be upon us. Our Optimist team is growing in size and strength and it was good to see how our new members fared at the Optimist Nationals.
The second Youth Worlds 29er qualifier was held last month, Malo/Anatole qualified to represent HK and ARA. Congratulations!!! The Around Island race took place on the 12th November which two Academy boats entered, challenging conditions pushed our sailors to their limits but it was again a brilliant opportunity for the 29ers to train for the 2018 Worlds held in January this year.
As always we shall continue to post updates on the Academy's Facebook page.

NEWS
HKSF Youth Worlds 29er Selection Event
Malo/Anatole, Harriette/Russell, Lewis/Dylan, Augustin/Adam and Karrie/Penelope.
Day 1 saw 4 races completed, Anatole/Malo had consistent results finishing with 3 2nds, unfortunately they didn't have such a great second race finishing 6th. Harriette/Russell raced together for the first time in preparation for the 29er Worlds and finished with 2 3rds. Lewis/Dylan steadily progressed in the first 3 races finishing with a 3rd in Race 3. Only for it then to go wrong in race 4 finishing with a 7th. Karrie/Penelope raced together for the first time, both girls are still very light in the 29er but they persevered, capsized several times but managed to complete every race, a good start for ARA's newest girl team.
Sadly for Day 2 the wind did not fill in and so after several hours waiting around racing was abandoned for the day.
Final results can be found below.
2017 Around the Island Race
Karrie/Akira eventually finished 11 minutes ahead of Malo/Anatole, taking 5hrs 37 mins to complete the race. Malo/Anatole took 5hrs 48mins and finished 10th overall. The boys were slightly disappointed as they had lead for the majority of the race in the stronger winds. However Karrie/Akira were elated finishing 3rd overall, also coming home with 1st dinghy and Karrie winning 1st youth and also 1st Female helm.
Both boats sailed exceptionally in the most challenging of conditions, they should all be very proud of themselves.
Well done.
Optimist Nationals 2017
The 2017 Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association National and Open Championships were held out of the Hebe Haven Yacht Club on the 18th and 19th of November with a total of 66 boats entered with 4 entries from China.
The Optimist team had 8 Academy sailors competing. Casey Law, Juliette Clot, Carter Stewart, Emily Polson, Amaury Guillosson, Sam Badenach, Arno Zurcher and Cameron Law.
Day 1 started with around a 2 hour delay with all sailors being held a shore but in the end provided the best wind for the weekend with the breeze ranging from 8 - 14 knots which allowed for 3 races to completed. The day delivered mixed results for the team closing out with Casey Law placed 5th overall, 1st in the U12's with Juliette Clot 12th overall and 5th in the U12's and Emily Polson holding down 3rd in the U10's.
