Information for Parents
Oregon Test Kit Distribution
The Oregon Health Department (OHA) and the Oregon Department of Education has asked all schools statewide to distribute take-home COVID test kits to all students. Each student will receive one test kit (containing two tests) as a part of this distribution. With our school offices closed during the summer months on-site testing access will not be available, and this distribution will provide testing resources to those families who continue to choose to use COVID testing to screen for the virus. Please note this is a statewide directive, and is not specific to our district.
As per OHA instructions, the new expiration date for the iHealth tests are nine months from the date of manufacture. Since the original expiration date was six months from the date of manufacture, please add three months to the “use by” date stamped on the packaging, if applicable.
If your family does not choose to utilize the test kit provided by OHA, please feel free to drop off unused kits in the dropbox at our Main Entrance, or pass the kit along to others.
8th Grade Promotion Details
- Date: The Sherwood Middle School Promotion activities will take place on Friday, June 17th from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
- Promotion will be held outside in the SMS stadium. Family and friends will be seated in the stands, while students are seated in chairs on the track. No tickets are required and masks are optional.
- Entry Into Stadium: Parents may enter and exit the stadium by way of the ticket booth entrances at the front of the stadium or through the gate behind the stadium on Villa RD.
- Meeting Place: With several students and their families attending Promotion you may want to establish a predetermined meeting place for after the ceremony.
- Photos: Families are welcome to take photos in the stadium or on campus at the end of the ceremony. Robes may be worn during pictures after promotion but should be returned to one of the marked bins in the stadium or at the activities entrance when finished.
- 8th Grade Promotion Celebration: SMS 8th graders are invited to attend the Promotion Celebration following the ceremony on June 17th in the SMS Commons from 5:30-7:30 pm. There will be pizza, a DJ, and treats to enjoy. If you can help out with your time, please sign up here... if you can donate, check out our list here.
SMS Building Secure Drill: Next week SMS will be holding a Secure drill for students to practice safety protocol for a time when the building is put into a Secure status. In a Secure drill all students will be brought into the building if they are outside. While inside, students will move about the building doing business as usual. No one is allowed into or out of the building during a Secure. Please keep this in mind if you are dropping off or picking up your student next week.
Chromebook Return: On Tuesday, June 14th, students will return their Chromebooks. This will take place during math classes. Please remind students they will need to have their power cord to turn in as well as their Chromebook.
Move Up Day: Move Up Day will be held for 6th and 7th graders on June 17th. This is an opportunity for current 6th and 7th grade students to meet and hear from teachers of 7th and 8th grade, respectively. Students will hear from teachers in each content area and from an elective teacher.
8th Grade Tour of SHS: On Wednesday, June 15th, 8th grade students will travel to SHS for a tour and lunch. They will leave SMS at approximately 8:30 and return to SMS at approximately 11:15 a.m. Following the field trip to SHS, 8th grade students will participate in promotion practice, then attend scheduled afternoon activities for all students.
Lost & Found: If your student has any lost items, please have the check the Lost & Found. Items remaining after school is out for the year will be donated to charity.
2022-23 and 2023-24 District Calendars: As you may know, in February 2022 the SSD Board of Directors approved the District calendars for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years. The approved calendars can be found on the District website here.
One important change for both of these approved calendars is that the start of the school year will now include student attendance days beginning prior to Labor Day weekend. This coming fall, for instance, please note that school will begin September 1, prior to Labor Day weekend. The reason for this change is to meet state instructional hour requirements while maintaining a full week during Thanksgiving Break and two full weeks during Winter Break, which feedback has indicated continues to be important to the community of Sherwood.
Medication Pick-up: If your student has medication at school, please plan to pick it up from the school office prior to June 20th. Any medication remaining at SMS after June 20th will be taken to our Health Services Department for pick-up at a later date.
Summer Hours: Our school office closes on Tuesday, June 21st and will re-open approximately Wednesday, August17th.
The District Office summer hours are: Monday-Thursday, 7:30 am to 4:00pm.
While our school offices are closed during the summer, please deliver completed enrollment forms to the District Office, located at 21920 SW Sherwood Blvd. Forms are available online or can be picked up at the District Office.

Summer Enrichment Program: Sherwood School District is excited to be offering a summer enrichment program for our middle school students. These classes are intended to enrich and extend skills in a fun, camp-like environment blending both academics and social elements. All classes are free of charge, students will have access to a nut-free snack and to-go lunch, and transportation will be provided, as needed. Please check the SSD Website for more information about registration and the classes offered.
Thank you! As the Administrative Assistant I have been responsible for sending a variety of information to parents over the past years. In doing so, I feel like I have gotten to know many of you from your email responses and questions. I would like to let you know that I will be retiring at the end of this school year. Aubrey Urdahl will be taking my place at SMS. I am sure you will find her equally as committed to providing you with the information you need to know in a timely manner. Thank you for the kindness, understanding, and support you have shown me. I look forward to this next adventure but will truly miss the SMS staff, students, and families.
Sincerely,
Jeanette Godfrey
