Spartans @ the Library
Two weeks in already!
Library Visits
The last two weeks has been a busy one for everyone in KCI. It is always wonderful to reconnect to students after the summer holidays and to meet newcomers to our school. The library has been busy signing out textbooks to the high school students and hopefully they will come back for visits to sign out books for enjoyment.
On the elementary end students from grades 5-7 started the new digital literacy class. This is a class I am very excited about building in hopes that is will be a strong program that will support our students with their critical thinking, research skills, digital citizenship skills and online creativity, We are going to start the course off with research skills that will be transferable to their other classes. Students very first class involved a library scavenger hunt! Students were able to walk around the library and search for different types of books in both the fiction and non-fiction section! I think they had a great time.
The grade 5-7 classes also came to visit the library to either learn the libraries organization or to have a refresher. Students learned about genres and started to get an idea of what type of books they like to read. We also talked about I-PICK. This is a great tool for students, especially younger students, to use when selecting books. All students left the library after this visit with a couple of new books to read.

Choosing a Book (Best Fit Books)
When it is time to choose a book for enjoyment you should have freedom of choice. One of the most important things to keep in mind when getting students excited about reading is for them to choose topics that interest them. Nothing is worse than being forced to read a book that you dislike. That being said sometimes we have to read a book that we don't really like, but that is usually because it fits into the curriculum your teacher is teaching. When it is time to choose something to read for fun then you MUST pick something that you like. My suggestion is if the book hasn't hooked you in the first two chapters than the chances are you won't finish the book. That is why our library has been organized by authors in the hopes that students will have an easier time finding something they will enjoy.
There are many different types of formats that "count" as reading. We are a society that is bombarded by media that we find on our apps, websites we like, online newspapers and magazines, e-books ect. This all counts as reading!
