Drop-Off Procedures
Now that our school year is in full swing, and students are adjusted to their new classrooms and routines, it is important that we adhere to drop-off procedures.
Our first bell rings at 8:50 a.m. Students will be supervised from that point until the start of the school day at 8:55 a.m. If you drive your child to school, your child must be dropped off along the sidewalk in the South parking lot. School buses ONLY are permitted in the front drive of the school. Do not drop students off in the North parking lot. Students are expected to be in school by the 8:55 a.m. when the second bell rings. Please say goodbye to your child at the main door. Our goal is to help children develop a sense of independence from parents and this is a perfect opportunity to allow your child to do this. Teachers are not available to converse with parents at the classroom door. Please call or email to schedule an appointment with the teacher.
Buster the Bus Assembly
The Michigan Department of Education recommends that: “every school bus driver conduct an emergency evacuation of pupils from the school bus at least three (3) times per year (front, rear, and front/rear combination).”
In compliance with this recommendation, keeping SAFETY as a top priority, the Walled Lake/Dean Transportation bus drivers and BUSTER THE BUS performed a skit today about safe bus riding practices. Your child’s bus driver explained and lead the children through a practice bus evacuation. This evacuation was done on school property. They also watched several short videos on bus and bus stop safety.
This program was for students in kindergarten through 2nd grade. We will do a program for the 3rd – 5th graders later in the school year.

Third Grade Reading Law
Many of you have heard about the Third Grade Reading Law and it was a topic presented at Glengary's Curriculum Night on September 11th. The Third Grade Reading Law was instituted in 2017, by the Michigan Legislature who wanted to ensure that students exit third-grade reading at or above grade level. This law impacts current kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students.
- Please review the Third Grade Reading video Catherine Kochanski, Walled Lake Schools assistant superintendent for Learning Services, leads with Sara Bruckman, Guest Elementary teacher, and Lori Burke, the Early Literacy specialist.
- Please review the WLCSD Third Grade Reading Law Fact Sheet.
Please reach out to your child's teacher or to Mrs. Johnson, principal, with any questions about the Third Grade Reading Law. We are committed to working in partnership to support your child and their individual learning needs!

Positivity Project
Integrity
Next week, students will learn about Integrity. Integrity means you are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely. Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. The character card which defines integrity and explains why it matters is attached below. I encourage you to print this card and use it as tool to reinforce the strength of integrity at home.
Some ways to support integrity at home are listed below:
1. Model Integrity- Our kids watch everything we do! Be a role model and demonstrate integrity through your actions and words.
2. Create A Recipe For Integrity- Integrity involves many different parts or “ingredients.” For this fun activity, we encourage families to think like a world-class chef and create the perfect recipe for living with integrity. Parents can ask their children to write down all of the ingredients that they believe go inside the recipe for integrity. This is a great way to have a discussion with your children about the meaning of integrity, the importance of being honest and other important family values. For this activity, the ingredients should describe actions, words, and deeds that demonstrate how to live with integrity. Parents can ask their children to place all of their ingredients inside of a bowl to be displayed on a table or maybe a countertop. Or, parents can help their children turn this activity into an art project by asking their children to draw, paint or color their bowl full of ingredients for integrity. We encourage families to display their recipe somewhere that is easily visible at home as a reminder to act with integrity every day!
3. Share meaningful stories- Examples of integrity are contained in human stories everywhere. When you read books with your kids, listen to stories about their peers, watch TV or movies together, or talk about what’s going on in the world, ask your kids to find examples of how individuals stood up for their beliefs in ways that made a difference for themselves or the world around them. Make the topic of integrity part of the conversation!
4. Read Books about Integrity- Click the link below to check out a list of excellent children's books about integrity. Link: https://www.earlychildhoodeducationzone.com/best-childrens-books-about-honesty/

Responsibilities would include arriving by 8:45 to stand outside near the flagpole to help ensure student safety as students are getting released from parents through the carpool line and gathering at the outside door waiting for the bell to ring.
