F.E.M.M.E.S. - STEM
The F.E.M.M.E.S. Explore Capstone events this year will be a set of hour-long virtual sessions held from 11AM - 12 PM every Saturday from March 20 to April 17 for 4th to 6th graders. These events will expose students to various interactive STEM activities, allow them to gain hands-on experience in performing some experiments and projects, and give them an opportunity to interact with women pursuing college degrees and careers in STEM. The final session on April 17 will feature Dr. Meghan Duffy, Professor at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at University of Michigan, as our keynote speaker! All of the events are specifically designed to support girls+ in developing confidence and interest in STEM fields, but like all F.E.M.M.E.S activities, is open to students of all genders.
We are hoping that you will help us spread the word to your students! To this email, I have attached a flyer with the information about the event registration. They can register for our event via this online link: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6ta4qEQTvxW1ybs. The registration deadline is Friday, 26th February 2021.
We will provide our participants with all of the materials required to perform these activities from the comfort of their homes while they attend our event. This materials packet will also contain an instruction manual for students who would like to attend the events but are unable to do so virtually. Participants can indicate their preferences during registration and we will provide them with the materials packets accordingly.
We’d also like to share with you a downloadable computer game created by one of our F.E.M.M.E.S. team members! Game players arrive on another planet and are asked to help out with the aliens’ research efforts: framing hypotheses, collecting data, test materials, etc. The game was made specifically with 4th-6th graders in mind, and, on the game website, you’ll find a list of discussion questions that act as a great teaching tool post-game. We would be thrilled if you’re interested in sharing this creative resource with your students. You can check it out at the game link here: https://sydneee.itch.io/unearth-sciences-last-hope.
Please reach out to me with any questions. You can also read more about F.E.M.M.E.S. on our website: http://femmes.studentorgs.umich.edu.
We hope your students can join our virtual Winter Capstone events!
Sincerely,
Sophie Hill
F.E.M.M.E.S. Graduate President

ABSENT WORK
When students are absent, teachers will do their best to fill them in on the work they miss. Teachers utilize a variety of tools to keep students up to date on work (Schoology, Google Classroom, on-line planners, etc.). It is not feasible to have absent students Zoom into classes that are happening at school. In addition, teachers are not able to privately Zoom with students who are absent to reteach the lessons. A good time to get additional help is during
Academic 30. Teachers will provide the work that can be replicated to students upon their return. It is not always possible to recreate classroom discussion or activities.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION SUPPORT (PBIS) AT MEADOWS
Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is an application of a behaviorally-based systems approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the link between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs.
Meadows has an active committee implementing the PBIS program, and your support is essential. Together we can help our students know and uphold these expectations.
Our Meadows PBIS parent letter can be found below, along with the PRIDE Behavior Matrix, which we ask be reviewed with your child.
Lastly, we've updated our PRIDE Board for February, offering suggestions on how to practice Effort.
Please follow @NoviMeadows on Twitter to see our PRIDE in action.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me.
