OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - Nov. 4-8, 2019
Fike Grad Achieves Childhood Dream
Shout Out! to LaMarcus Strickland, Fike HS Class of 2018, for achieving his childhood dream of becoming a firefighter with Wilson Fire/Rescue Services! We are incredibly proud of him! He credits The Gentlemen’s Agreement, an achievement program for African American males found in three of our elementary schools, five of our middle schools and the three high schools, with giving him the support he needed to enhance his leadership skills and open doors for him. Great coverage in Thursday’s Wilson Times! His success story is a reminder of the amazing job opportunities right here in Wilson for our graduates and the awesome training offered at Wilson Community College! For more information about The Gentlemen’s Agreement, contact Maurice Barnes at maurice.barnes@wilsonschoolsnc.net.

Medical Experts
Shout Out! to Wilson Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Mark Holyoak and Chief Nursing Officer Theresa Dix for speaking with the students in Ms. Dumong’s Health Team Relations and Health Science 2 classes at Fike HS on Oct. 24. They discussed healthcare careers, HIPAA and what employers look for when hiring. The students were very engaged and asked a lot of questions. They are meeting with students at Hunt later this week. We are so appreciative that two top executives at our local hospital are taking time out of their schedules to connect with our students!
Exceptional Duo
“Shout Out! to WCS Exceptional Children Program Specialist Chaquita Avent-Holloman for being recognized as the 2019 Outstanding Professional and Hunt HS Special Education Teacher Katherine Hoots for being recognized as the 2019 Outstanding Educator during the Wilson Committee for Persons with Disabilities Recognition Reception on Oct.17. Both women deserve to be celebrated for the contributions they make each day as they serve our students!” - From Wilson County Board of Education Member Debora Powell
Dedicated Service
The Board of Education recognized Maintenance Department Bookkeeper & Secretary Sue Farmer and Maintenance Department Director Mark Letchworth at the Nov. 4 meeting. Ms. Farmer was recognized for being named the 2018 Employee of the Year by the North Carolina Public School Maintenance Association (NCPSMA). She has the huge task of keeping up with all of the maintenance projects being done in our schools. Mr. Letchworth was recognized for his 25 years of faithful service to both NCPSMA and WCS. He was recently featured in the NCPSMA newsletter for his leadership and expertise.
