HS students and the CDC
by Jillyan Reid and Katy Traylor
On March 24th, the high school agriculture students lent a hand and assisted the CDC students and teachers in planting at their garden in the front of the CDC section of the RISD intermediate campus. The CDC (Child Development Center) is a different portion of the school where children from infants to three years old go to learn. This isn’t just a preschool, but they have a whole curriculum just like public school students. We had the pleasure of interviewing a few of the teachers there.
First we interviewed Laura Teague.
What is your job here?
“I am the director here at the CDC,” Teague said. “I work to help everything run smoothly so that the kids, the parents, and our staff members have the best experience with teaching the kids and helping them have the best early childhood education.”
What do you like about your job?
“I love the kids and the staff members,” Teague said. “I love being able to see their passion for their students.”
Next we interviewed Courtney Garrett
What is your job in the Ag department?
“I teach floral design, greenhouse management (this class), and principles of agriculture sciences and natural resources.”
What made you want to bring your Ag students over here to help the kids?
“It gives them a different opportunity to see how they can benefit with helping little ones learn about the process of gardening and the joys and even the discomforts of it.”
We then interviewed Gwendolyn Barnett, one of the three’s teachers.
Do you enjoy your job, and what do you enjoy about it?
“Absolutely,” Barnett said. “Everything. I have a passion for education and I feel like it should start as young as possible.”
Is your job difficult, and how?
“At times, yes,” Barnett said. "You’re on your feet for 8-12 hours a day. You end up worrying about children besides your own, which can be emotional at times, but it’s also very rewarding.”
