From the Principal's Desk

Thank you Lions for an excellent 1st semester. Spring will be a busy time at Borah with multiple opportunities to take pride in being a Lion. Athletics, academic organizations and clubs are some of the options we invite students to participate in. I encourage students to start the semester strong by working hard with your teachers to master your classroom content and being an engaged learner in the classroom. I am proud of our student body's dedication to learning, perseverance and teamwork. Thank you students for a great 2022. Welcome to 2023 and the start of our 2nd semester.

Go Lions!

BORAH HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING DEPARTMENT

Borah's Student Services team provides support for our students in the areas of Academic Planning, College and Career Counseling, and Personal/Social Development. In providing a comprehensive system in these areas, we are helping students to develop the necessary skills they will need to achieve their goals in high school and beyond. Each student is unique and we are committed to empowering them to discover their strengths that can lead them to their future success.

2023-2024 Registration Process begins in January

School wide registration is an opportunity for students to collaborate with their teachers, parents, and staff about course selection and post secondary plans and career goals. We hope all students have a rigorous and rewarding schedule with students considering new opportunities.

Counselors will be visiting classrooms, providing registration information, reviewing graduation requirements, and discussing college and career pathways.

Current Borah Sophomores and Juniors will be selecting and imputing course requests February 13th-17th for the 23-24 school year.

Counselors will visit Junior High Schools in January:

West Pre Registration Tuesday January 17th

Course Registration Thursday January 26th

South Pre Registration Friday January 20th

Course Registration Friday January 27th

BORAH FOOD PANTRY

Key Club and the Idaho Food Bank are hosting a mobile food pantry the 3rd Thursday of each month throughout the school year. Distribution will take place in the front parking lot at Borah from 4pm-6pm. You or your parents can stop by and pick up a box of food on your way home. Food boxes vary by month but often include fresh or canned fruit, vegetables, meat and essential household items. We distribute to roughly 100 families each month and our supply is limited, so first come, first served.

Current dates for Winter/Spring 2023:

- January 19th

- February 16th

- March 16th

LIONS SHARE FOOD PANTRY

The Borah community has benefited immensely from our Lions Share Food Pantry by having a resource located at school within the neighborhood for students and families to have convenient access to basic food and toiletry items. If you would like to make donations you can drop them off in the Borah Counseling Office to Kris King or you can make a monetary donation to the Lions Share Food Pantry account through the Boise School District Foundation. If your family is in need of more assistance than the pantry can provide, please contact our Borah Social Worker, Becky Woodland, at rebecca.woodland@boiseschools.org. If you have questions or would like a list of frequently used items, please contact Kris King at 208-854-4387 or kris.king@boiseschools.org.

Thank you to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, Idaho Central Credit Union and members of Delta Kappa Gamma Women Educators for their donation of items to the pantry.

1 - 1 Devices

All students are required to use a Boise School District 1 - 1 device (Chromebook). These devices have pre-loaded classroom tools, software, etc. which can only be accessed through a BSD 1 - 1 Device. Personal devices (laptops, phones, etc.) will not work for students in accessing classroom content.

Borah Support Groups

Does your student need extra support?

Borah is offering support groups to all students and are accessed by both those seeking connections and those needing intensive support. The purpose of a support group within the high school setting is to provide participants with a comforting, safe environment where they feel free to express themselves. In addition to providing emotional support, group participation also allows students to establish meaningful and trusting relationships with their peers. If you would like to sign your student up for a group or have any questions, feel free to contact our school social worker Becky woodland at rebecca.woodland@boiseschools.org or 208.854.6916

ATTENDANCE

Reminders:

  • All students are required to obtain a permit to leave if they are leaving during school hours.
  • Exceptions: during lunch time or if they have an off campus class and are leaving at that time.

BORAH LIBRARY

The Borah Library is kicking off our new reading challenge! Use this link to peruse categories and sign up: BSD QUAD BOOK CHALLENGE 2023.

We assist students daily in finding the perfect book, be it print and/or eBook/eAudiobook. Students can access a plethora of professional and academic news and research through the "Database" page on our website. This is a 21st century library commons and we encourage students and classes to make use of our diverse collection of technology and tools: audio/video recorders, editing software, iMac, Adobe Suite, tablets, programmable robots, 3D printer, cutting tools, craft supplies and games.

Please return ANY/ALL library books, language arts texts or textbooks that you find in your home! There are no longer overdue fees, but there can be a charge for a "Lost"
book. Please return any items you have to Borah, even if they are from another school!

FOOD SERVICE

During the 2022-2023 school year the Boise Schools will be charging for breakfasts and lunches because the federal pandemic waivers have expired. Families will need to complete a free/reduced lunch application in order to continue to receive free lunch at Borah. Applications will be available in July at https://foodservice.boiseschools.org/ or at Borah's registrations for next year. Families that receive food stamps will be directly certified for free lunch and will not need to do an application. If you have any questions, please see the Boise Schools food service website at https://foodservice.boiseschools.org/

COLLEGE BOUND

College Bound Checklist:

For students planning to enroll in college in the fall of 2023, there are several tasks to complete this spring:

  • Apply to colleges. Each college's deadline is different!

  • Search for Scholarships. Scholarship deadlines are often before application deadlines. Reach out to the college's Financial Aid Office with scholarship questions.

  • Sign up for Orientation. Whether virtual or in person, most colleges require new students to attend an orientation session where they will sign up for classes.

  • View & accept financial aid. Make sure students log into their college accounts to view their financial aid package. A financial aid package includes money offered from FAFSA (Pell Grants, Work Study, and Student Loans) as well as institutional scholarships.

  • Sign up for housing. If your student plans to live on campus, they will need to apply for housing through their college or university.

FAFSA

Borah is holding a hands-on FAFSA Night, Wednesday, November 2nd from 6-7:30 PM in Borah's Library. This is the opportunity to receive help filling out the FAFSA.
