APS: Natural & Renewable Resources
Weekly Newsletter: February 5th, 2016
Hope you're all having a great (short) week!
Snow days are great for many reasons: snowball fights, sleeping in, building a snowman, and of course, saving energy! When our buildings are unoccupied, our HVAC and Energy team works together to make sure that buildings are not running with occupied temperatures.
Speaking of our HVAC teams, if you'd like to have your students take a tour of their building to learn how heating, cooling, and water are circulated throughout the school (see pictures below), please email me and we will set it up!
Also, it is not too late for your school to participate in the Green Star Schools Program & Energy Challenge Competition for this semester. If you’d like to schedule a time to meet with me to learn more about the Green Star Schools Program or if you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Again, thank you so much for your support, interest, and passion for our students and the Green Star Schools Program.
TODAY IS FRIDAY, so please turn off and unplug for the weekend (Peyton Manning said so!)

Meet Lynne from Aurora Water. Over the next couple weeks she'll be installing high efficiency water sprayers in school cafeterias. As a district, we spend millions of dollars on water use throughout the year. Students will be conducting water audits to see where and how much water can be saved.
Wheeling Planeteers earn $1,200 for reducing energy use at the school. The Planeteers created "Promethean Police" and "Computer Cops" to crack down on teachers and staff who'd leave their equipment on and running throughout the week. Way to go, Planeteers!
CALLING ALL ARTISTS!
All of Colorado’s K-12 students are invited to showcase their artistic talent and their commitment to the environment by participating in the Colorado Association for Recycling’s 10th Annual Recycling Poster Contest, a project of the Education and Outreach Committee.
This year's theme: "Top 10 Reasons to Recycle"
Download the rules (PDF)
Ten (10) winners will receive prizes. One grand-prize winner receives a $100 gift card, and their winning artwork will serve as Colorado’s 2016 America Recycles Day (www.americarecyclesday.org) promotional piece and be distributed throughout the state. Plus, each school with winning entries will receive recycling educational materials and a free one-year teacher membership to RAFT Colorado.
Green Star Schools Program & APS Digital Badging Initiative
Here's how it works:
1. Students select an activity or reflect on a past activity and how it's defined by the "Journey" Badges (pictured).
2. Students complete activities that support their school in the Green Star Schools Program (Examples: go on a field trip to Alpine's Compost Facility, participate in the Colorado Assoc. for Recycling's Poster Contest--see below!--- etc.
3. Students upload evidence into credly.com (photos, reports, videos, links to websites, social media posts, etc.) using existing Claim Codes to earn designated badges.
4. An email will be sent to the student with confirmation of earned badge!
Confused, excited, unsure, elated, or would like a high-five?!
Send me an email or give me a call to go over this in more detail!
Students from Fletcher's Green Energy Club, take a tour of the "guts" of the school and learn whether or not smores can be made from the furnace's fire...
