Science of Reading Course Offerings
ARIN IU 28 2022-2023 School Year
Our Why
“Research has identified assessment and instructional practices with which every teacher and leader should be equipped. We believe that providing educators with this knowledge is a moral imperative. We are committed to evidence-aligned reading instruction being scaled with a sense of urgency in a comprehensive and systematic way by multiple stakeholders” (The Reading League [TRL], 2022).
Here's what we have in store!
Level 1
Introduction to the Science of Reading
Day One: In this introductory course, we will present the research behind the Science of Reading which will include the Simple View of Reading, The Four-Part Processing Model, Scarborough’s Rope, and Ehri’s Phases (Day 1 Topics) We will look at how universal screeners relate to these models and can be used to inform instruction.
Day Two: We will examine the five pillars of early literacy including Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Participants will take away strategies to immediately implement within their classroom related to the five pillars.
Level 2
Structured Literacy
Participants may choose between two options based upon instructional grade level. The K-2 grade band will focus more on early literacy skills including phonemic awareness and phonics. The 3-6 grade band will focus more on vocabulary and comprehension.
All sessions are designed referencing the text Structured Literacy Interventions by Louise Spear-Swerling. Book purchase is not required but strongly recommended.

K-2 Training
Day 1: We will focus on phonemic awareness and phonics instruction. Participants will look at why these skills are important for readers and how we can add practices into our current classrooms to support the development of these skills in our learners.
Day 2: We will focus on spelling and fluency. Participants will explore ways to use evidence-based practices to teach spelling and fluency in the classroom.
3-6 Training
Day 1: We will start by looking at fluency and why it is so important to reading comprehension. We will also focus on vocabulary instruction and learn how to select and teach vocabulary in the classroom.
Day 2: The focus will be on comprehension interventions and written expression. Participants will explore ways to develop reading comprehension and writing skills.
Level 3
The Strands of Scarborough's Rope - Assessment and Instruction
Day 1: We will take a deeper dive into Scarborough's Reading Rope. We will focus on Word Decoding including phonological awareness decoding, and sight recognition. We will examine diagnostic assessments that may be used to make team decisions for grouping students and ensuring progress movement through the tiers of instruction. We will study the Instructional Hierarchy and consider how to address component skills that will make interventions more effective for Tier 2 and 3.
Day 2: We will be looking at the Language Comprehension strands of Scarborough's Rope which include background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. We will examine diagnostic assessments that may be used to make team decisions for grouping students and ensuring progress movement through the tiers of instruction. We will study the Instructional Hierarchy and consider how to address component skills that will make interventions more effective for Tier 2 and 3.
