Puketapu School Newsletter
Week 1, Term 4, 2019
Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
Welcome to Term 4
Kia ora koutou,
We have had a great start to our final term of 2019. I have been really impressed with how our students and staff have returned, fresh from their school break. Thank you to all our parents for getting back into school routine which can be quite challenging.
For this week’s newsletter, I thought I would share the weekly email that I write to our staff as it relates well to us as parents and a community too.
Our Vision - Empower all People to be Healthy Lifelong Learners - this term, how will you personally act this vision out. How will you empower others? How will you be healthy (mind, soul, body, family)? How will you continue to learn?
Kia Kaha (Do Your Best) - be organised, stay organised, connect with your class each morning, connect with your team daily, sleep well, eat well, drink water
Kia Manawanui (Have a Heart) - greet each child and parent every morning, treat people with positive intent, find time for yourself in the week, speak kindly to all people in our school especially when under pressure)
Through the school break, I have reflected on many learnings (some very challenging situations) and what I have found is that if I come back to our vision and values then I get back on the right track and learn from them. This term we will have so many positive things happen and some challenges. Let's work together to foresee some of these challenges and support each other.
Year 8 Connect - We will have Year 8's that are anxious about high school, their hormones will be mixed up, and they will be sad about it being the last term of their Puketapu schooling. The Year 8's are the akonga that I would like us to make the most effort on in treating kindly and making connections with this term. This cohort will need the most love out of all of our students even though they might be the most difficult to connect with for some.
Logistics:
Learning Goals - Achievement Data - Thank you to everyone for having your achievement data in on Linc Ed last term. We now can use this learning information to set our budget for next year and for our strategic plan. You have 46 days left with your students this term so let's teach and work hard together to lift achievement for our learners.
Property - Totara 1 & 2 have moved into the hall as Rimu 3 & 4 re-roof has been moved until later this term. Thank you to Ale & Kelly for moving so seamlessly, I really appreciate you coming in on Friday and doing this at short notice. There will be scaffolding around A Block (Totara 1 & 2 & Admin) when you arrive tomorrow morning and the builders will be using some of our carparks. If you can park in the church area or out of the school for this term and walk a bit, that would be appreciated. We will keep you up to date with property happenings through the term. The new roofing on Rimu 1 & 2 looks great and we are really happy with the new multi-purpose learning space (hall). Please go and have a look.
Have a great start to your final term of 2019.

Have your say:
WHAT SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR CHILD TO LEAVE PUKETAPU SCHOOL WITH AS A YEAR 8?
Dinosaur dash
Mr B was the light green dinosaur.
Kia Kaha Mr B - You were certainly the fastest Dino on the day!
Check out our new Dillon Drive School Entrance
Located next to 49 Dillon Drive, we now have a well marked entrance.
Totara 1 and 2 certainly took the opportunity to check it out today!
As well as the great new sign, there is a concreted path which connects to our school field.
As the days are getting longer and the weather getting warmer why not park and walk during Term 4?
PARENT PORTAL AND REPORTING
We have had a few enquiries about our LINC-ED reporting system as people have new phones/numbers etc. if you did miss this notice, are new to the school or if you have different contact detail you will be able to follow these steps and get in the loop:
At Puketapu School our aim has been to implement a robust system that allows teachers, parents, and students to access learning in an online environment that is secure, easy, and effective.
LINC-ED allows teachers to share learning anytime, anywhere and this can be viewed on any device. We are excited about the potential that the software offers. The report is designed to build year on year so that over time you will have access to comments, assessments, images, video and helpful resources all in one place.
What you would expect to see:
Reading, Writing and Maths (Number & Algebra) Goals (what they are working on and what they have achieved)
Learning Comments (First half of Year) and School Values Comment (Kia Kaha - Do your best, Kia Māia - Be courageous, Kia Manawanui - Have a heart)
In the future we want to use this platform to:
- Share Student Learning that your child has selected to share with you
- Communicate through Team Newsletters & Notices
- Have Parents share learning that has happened at home

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE AT SCHOOL BEFORE THE BELL GOES
The beginning of each day is a very special time.
Before the bell goes at 8.55, children use this time to put away their lunch boxes and book bags, connect with their friends, catch up with their teacher, hand in any notices and settle together ready for learning.
This time before the bell goes is a very important time for our children to be prepared for the day.
Being on time allows them to be settled and organised and feel ready for a great day.
The Tech Hub
I hope you had a relaxing holiday.
This term students have selected modules around their interests - Soft materials, Micro:Bits and a new module called Inventions.
Inventions is a design and making unit of work based on Rube Goldburg Machines. Students will need to engineer and make a machine to perform a function - to pop a balloon. See the clip below for a much more complicated machine!
I have lots of questions from students about the Micro:Bits and where they can buy them from. There are lots of tutorials online so they can use them independently. Here is the link below to where you can purchase them.
