  • Hongwu began to rebuild China by reducing taxes, past reforms to improve agriculture, trade, increasing stability and prosperity throughout China
  • Hongwu also worked to revive traditional Chinese values (to obtain government officials educated in Confucian principles)
  • He took away some of the high level officials and took control
  • Hongwu died in 1398
  • Hongwu's son Yonglo took emperor and ruled from 1402 - 1424

Yonglo's Imperial City:

  • His city was in the middle of Beijing
  • Surrounded by high walls
  • Became known as the forbidden city, because most people were forbidden from entering it

MIng Decline:

  • Began to decline in the late 1500's
  • Weak rulers took throne
  • Under these weak rulers throne their corruption increased
  • They raised taxes
  • These high taxes combined with crop failures ( led to famine and hardship) in the 1600's
  • The last emperor killed himself to avoid the Manchu capturing him after they swept into Beijing
