A Quick Message from Mireles...
Welcome, Winter, Reindeer games, Career Day, Magnet School Field Trip and Patriot Camp!!
Thank you to all, for being light-hearted, and participating in the first week, of our 2nd annual, Reindeer Games! It's been fun to see ya'll getting in the spirit and having a little fun at work.
Please know, on behalf of many RMS staff, we are incredibly grateful for your patience and understanding throughout the last few weeks, as students have been pulled from class for various activities and events. Many of the events would not be possible without these students, their expertise and involvement. As we continue to educate the whole child, we sincerely thank you for your flexibility, as they have the opportunity to participate in these events.
I was chit chatting the other day with a couple of teachers who are new to us this year and they said this to me, "gosh, there is so much going on at Rawlinson all the time, this school is alive, exciting and happy. Coming from a campus that didn't do much for kids, this is so nice to be a part of."
It was a nice reminder during the hustle and bustle of it all, that Rawlinson is a student focused campus. Exactly the reason, for our every season!
Magnet School Field Trip - Tuesday, Dec. 10th
- Check boxes end of day on Monday. You will have folders with rosters & a map for the Magnet Field trip. Review the packet carefully.
- 8 Bus Groups/ 6 Presentation Groups (Be sure you know who your kids are for each of these)
- Reminder: 1st period, take attendance, have students put on colored wristbands and if at all possible (number those wristbands with the applicable bus number. If you can't get to that prior to Tuesday morning, we'll do it on the bus.)
- Don't leave to load your bus until you hear the announcement for your name. We will stagger this release, as to not inadvertently "lose" students.
Career Day - Wednesday, Dec. 11th
- Check w/ your coordinator, a friend, or a counselor if you have any questions or concerns about this event.
- Different this year: Career Day is in a "booth" format in the competition gym. Organized by Endorsement as to help students understand the concept better.
- Reminder: Students are divided by alpha grouping.
- Know your buddy and speak to them briefly prior for ease of transition.

Thoughts on Grading
Every year it seems that there are lively discussions about grading. Teachers, administrators, and parents all have their unique point of view around this hot topic. Sometimes we have difficulty letting go of antiquated mindsets about grading, so we turn to research professionals to guide us.
For about 10 years, our campus has participated in a myriad of professional learning opportunities around this issue. We have looked at research from Solution Tree’s Grading Guru, Rick Wormeli. This week I have outlined some important points from his research:
We have a moral imperative to teach in such a way as to engender hope and to keep our kids vested in the learning.
The zero on a hundred point scale creates a massive “F” range of 69 points. So the question we must ask ourselves is, “Do I give the lowest, most hurtful, and unrecoverable end of the F range, or do I give the most recoverable end of the F range with lots of hope, yet still an F?”
When we have to decide between a zero and a 69, we must decide on the most hopeful end, but nevertheless an accurate report that this student has not shown evidence of learning.
By giving nothing lower than a 50, we are mitigating the extraordinary negative impact that a zero makes.
For further information, please visit https://rickwormeli.com.
Reminder: Please upload your grades by 4:00 Friday December 13th. Progress Reports will go home on Monday December 16th. Thank you!
Note: If a child is missing an assignment, you can put an “M” in the gradebook, bplease ensure that you replace it with a grade before the end of the grading period.VIRTUAL PD, from your RMS peers!! - Maricela Flores

Angel Tree
We are looking for some "santas" to bless some of our Patriot families. There are currently angel tree tags on the Christmas Tree in the foyer. With your department or group of friends, we would love to ask for your support. Please consider donating to our amazing families. The tags have all the information needed--this year we are looking to sponsor families with gift cards. Please see Brandee or Potter for questions.
