Message from Principal Phelan
Here we are, the unofficial start of summer. Happy Memorial Day Weekend!
We want to extend a big thank you to the FTO for sponsoring Mike the Magician. The students and teachers alike enjoyed the show.
The Memorial Day Assembly was very special. The students opened with the presentation of the colors and then sang the National Anthem. We had presentations by students in grades three, four, and five. The Veterans who joined us appeared pleased with our tribute. I've included pictures from today's events.
Saturday, June 4th Lowell's Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Council will be marching in the Watertown Pride Parade. All are welcome to join us. We'll plan on meeting at the library just before 11 am. Everyone should come wearing their most colorful outfits and sparkles are always welcome!
Field Day is back this year! All Phillips and Lowell West students will be participating in Field Day at Victory Field on Thursday, June 9, with a rain date scheduled for Friday, June 10. The students will participate in different relay races and events. Please make sure your student has dressed appropriately for outdoor activities, has a bottle of water that can be refilled, a bagged lunch, dry clothes, and sunscreen!

A Message from Lowell's Behavioral Health Team
The SEL team has set up a student mailbox (see picture below) in the Behavioral Health Office where students can leave our team a note if we are unavailable and they need a check-in, have big feelings, or are facing a challenge. We will do our best to respond as soon as we can.
Scenes from Lowell's Memorial Day Celebration
Ms. Moriarty’s Class’ Memorial Day Essay
Quinn: Hi everyone, I’m Quinn and I am in Ms. Moriarty’s class. We learned about the history of Memorial Day and some students from our class will be reading our class essay about the history of this important holiday.
Quinn: Memorial Day is a day that American people honor those soldiers that have fought in American Wars. We honor and celebrate those who have died serving our country as well as those who have served and are still living. Jaione: We are grateful for what they have done for our country and us. Arafat: Originally the holiday was called Decoration Day and it began after the Civil War ended. The holiday began in the year 1868. It was called Decoration Day because families of the soldiers went to their graves and decorated them with flowers, notes, flags and homemade toys. Bella: In 1882, the name of the holiday was changed to Memorial Day because the South and North came together to honor the Union and Confederate soldiers that died in the Civil War. Since the Civil War, many American soldiers have fought and died serving our country in many wars. Allie: The holiday became an official US holiday in 1967 and in 1971 it was changed to the last Monday in May. So this Memorial Day, it is important when you are having some holiday fun, to take some time to remember the people who have served our country in war.

Language Choice Survey for Students Going to Middle School
Almost all students will be recommended to take a World Language next year in grade 6 at Watertown Middle School. We have three languages from which to choose: Arabic, Italian, and Spanish. Students were given the opportunity to participate in Spanish class on a regular basis over the years, and in early May they were given the opportunity to learn in Arabic and Italian during a sample class period. Please use that information as well as the information on the form to help inform your decision about which language to take in middle school. Email World Languages Coordinator, Adam Silverberg adam.silverberg@watertown.k12.ma.us with questions. Please fill out this survey as soon as possible, so we can begin scheduling. If you have already filled out the form, thank you. You do not need to fill it out again.

I wanted to highlight some of the activities that may interest your kids. In addition to the mini-parade that kicks off the Extravaganza, we have arranged to have lawn games and an obstacle course that will be run by Boys and Girls Club staff. Art projects will include rainbow wand making, making your own pronoun pin, and tie-dying.
Parade participants (all are welcome to join) will gather in front of the Library and kick-off at 11:00. We will be supplying as many noisemakers and mini-Pride flags as we can. Please feel free to make and carry signs. Dress fabulously!
ALSO: I have reserved one information booth for the Diversity and Belonging Councils (elementary schools)—there is the possibility of having more than one table. Please let me know asap if the one table is adequate.
Come join the book club discussion, Monday, June 14th at 4:00 pm. All are welcome the featured book is This is Our Rainbow.
