Thinking Like a 3rd Grader
Knowledge Bowl Wins
The Battle Lake Knowledge Bowl team traveled to Fergus Falls on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 and competed in a meet that featured 19 teams.
The team of Connor, Thomas, Brady, Jacob and Brennan finished in first place! The team of Makenna, Paige, Fern, Joey N, and Leah won the "Excellence in Math" award!
The next meet for the team will be in February.
FFA Teams Win Big at Ridgwater College
Three Battle Lake FFA Teams competed in the Region 3 FFA Contests held at Ridgewater College on Friday, January 10th. The FFA'ers had a great day as the Small Animal/Vet Science, Poultry and Crops Evaluation teams all qualified for the Minnesota State FFA Convention in April.
The Small Animal/Vet Science team of Madison Cameron, Annika Lukken, Madilyn Burkette, Laney Frost and Rae Frost took first in the contest out of 15 teams. The team was led by top ten individuals of Laney Frost (3rd), Rae Frost (6th) and Annika (7th).
The Poultry Evaluation team of Emmy Lundquist, Sam Jossart, Jarren Hill, Lily Siedel and Brailey Wilson also placed first in their contest. Emmy was the first place individual out of 35 contestants and seventh grader Jarren place second individually.
Not to be left in Battle Lake in April, the youngest crops team at the contest consisting of eighth graders Tyler Christensen, Sawyer Christensen, Mason Dalluge and Jack Mekalson placed 4th out of 7th teams and also qualified for state. Tyler Christensen anchored the team by placing 4th out of the 33 contestants at the event.
Advanced Biology Wolf Trip
The Advanced Biology class spent a weekend learning about wolves at the International Wolf Center in Ely, MN. They also practiced radio telemetry, hiked, howled and went dogsledding.
Honor Band
Madison Cameron, Leah Koltes and Cayden Mansker represented Battle Lake School in the NW Region MN Band Directors Association Honor Band Festival on Saturday, January 11, 2020. The students practice the music in advance and then come together for a day of rehearsals and sectionals. Congratulations on a well deserved honor and for giving a wonderful concert!

Mock Trial
2020 Battle Lake Mock Trial Team Heads to Court
The Battle Lake High School Mock Trial team is midway through competitions for the 2020 season. Students in mock trial develop an understanding of the American legal system, while also increasing their critical and creative thinking, effective communication, and analytical reasoning. In this year’s fictional criminal case, the defendant Sam Soto is charged with 3rd degree murder in the oxycodone overdose death of his friend. Lawyers and witnesses for the team try both the prosecution and defense sides of the case.
The lawyers for the team are: Sage Christensen, Paige Mills, Joseph Nine, Brian Seip, and Orion Franklin. The witnesses are portrayed by Paige Mills, Jasmine Malone, Kate Johansen, Brian Seip, Lily Vondal, Kyleigh Shebeck, and Tehya McDonald. The timers and bailiffs are Kate Johansen, Orion Franklin, Lily Vondal, Kyleigh Shebeck, and Tehya McDonald. Coaches are Shauna Heggem and attorney coach Joshua Heggem.
The team enters its final regular season competition with a 3-0 record, and they will present the defense side of the case on Thursday, February 6th against Albany at the Douglas County Courthouse.
Geography Bee
The Geography Bee took place on January 22, 2020. Select students from grades 4-8 competed.

BPA Region 7 Competition
Mrs. Heggem - English
Mrs. Heggem teaches a variety of English courses at Battle Lake High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at Bemidji State University, master's degree from Southwest Minnesota State University and additional graduate studies through Minnesota State University Moorhead. She coaches the Battle Lake Mock Trial team, is the GSA Advisor and Student Council Co-Advisor.
