A Message from the Counselors
The week of August 22, 7th grade students will be receiving suicide prevention education in their science classes using an evidence-based curriculum called SOS (Signs of Suicide). Students will be watching an age-appropriate video and participate in a guided discussion about depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video, students will complete a response slip indicating whether they would like to talk to a school counselor about urgent concerns in relationship to the video. We encourage parents to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, to access resources, and to learn more about the key message that the 7th grade students will learn in class.
Later in the school year, there will be mental health education that will be occurring with the 8th graders as well.
Education and Career Action Plan
Our 7th and 8th grade students will be completing the first steps in their ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan) by completing a career interest inventory with counselors in their social studies classes. An ECAP (Education and Career Action Plan) reflects a student's current plan of coursework, career aspirations, and extended learning opportunities in order to develop the student's individual academic, career goals and postsecondary plans. This plan will be reviewed with their counselors several times throughout their junior high and high school years.
As Junior High students, the information provided from completing the Interest Inventory is helpful to start exploring possible careers based on their interests and using this information to plan core and elective courses for high school. Once completed, students will be able to explore various job industries and career information including possible salaries, required education, and job projections.
8th Graders will be completing this August 29-September 2
7th Grades will be completing this September 6- September 9
