2nd & 3rd Grade News/ NOTICIAS
Mrs. O'Rourke's Class
December 4, 2019
Happy December!
Brr.... It is getting cold outside! Now that the weather is getting colder, please remember to send a hat, gloves and a warm coat to school with your child. The students go out to recess every day unless the "feels like" temperature is below 10 degrees! They will stay inside for recess if the "feels like" temperature is below 10 degrees. It could be pretty cold outside! If they would like to play in the snow, they need to bring snow pants, snow boots and warm gloves. I have some hats and gloves that they are welcome to borrow if they forget theirs at home!
On Friday, December 6, we will participate in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). CHOICES for Parents is sponsoring this event for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across Illinois! After the event, we will receive FREE books for participating! Hopefully, we will be able to read with another classroom.
The week of December 9th we will be celebrating Hour of Code at school! "The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts." This year, our class will be teaching the kindergarten students how to program the robots! Then we will be learning new coding activities on our laptops.
Just a reminder: Our library day is on Thursdays at 2:00 PM. Please help your child be responsible and make sure they bring their books back to school every week. If they do not have their books on Thursday, they do not get to participate in the library check out.
Please help your child be responsible and check his/her backpack every day. Some of the backpacks are full of papers! If they have homework, the homework will be in the red folder. They are still learning so we need to teach them how to be organized :)
The students need to have gym shoes if they want to participate in PE. You are welcome to leave a pair of gym shoes here at school to be used during PE. Some students are coming to school with boots and loafers. Unfortunately, they are not allowed on the gym floor if they don't have gym shoes on.
Please remember to sign and return your student's reading log each month! Thanks for the support at home with reading :)
Let me know if you have any questions or comments!

¡Feliz diciembre!
Brr ...

Literacy/Literatura
We are learning about poems. We have read a few different poems about winter. During writing time, we will be using an app on our Ipads to create our own poems!
We are continuing to learn about different types of fiction. We learned about fables, fairy tales and trickster tales. Next, we will read a few myths. The students have been enjoying reading these very creative, funny stories! We have been comparing and contrasting the stories.
During reading time, we continue to focus on identifying the main idea of a story and identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution of the fiction texts we read.
Please...Don't forget to sign and send in your child's reading log at the end of each month! The students should read for about 20 minutes a night during the school week. Don't worry if they miss a night or two. The students will write the number of minutes they read on the calendar. On the back of the calendar, they can write the books that they read. They can read the same books over and over if they want! They can read to a sibling or a friend. At the end of the month, when the students bring back their reading logs, they get a prize from our prize box. We don't count how many days they read on the calendar, we just want them to find some time at home to read! As you know, research tells us that the more children read, the better readers they become. Please let me know if you would like me to send home some books for your child to read at home! Please send the signed December reading log back to school on January 1st. I will send home the January reading log when we come back to school in January!
We have been working on the Bilingual Grammar Curriculum ASL & English. This is an awesome curriculum that really helps the students with their writing. Currently, we are working on using a subject and predicate to write a complete sentence.
A continuación, leeremos algunos mitos.
MATHEMATICS Matematicas
2nd Grade
The students have started a unit on graphing. We have learned about tally graphs and bar graphs. The students are learning to create graphs on their own and to answer questions about the graphs they create. They love walking around the school to collect data from the other students in the building!
3rd Grade
We are continuing to work on multiplication and division concepts. We are learning that multiplication is repeated addition. We are using multiplication and division to answer everyday word problems. The students have started a new program called Rocket Math. They take a one minute timed assessment to practice multiplication fluency.
2do. grado
SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES Estudios Sociales
We have started a new unit in Social Studies about Government/Citizenship/Laws. Currently, we are learning about citizens (responsibilities, rights, etc.). We will learn how a government helps its citizens. We will discuss how citizens solve problems and create laws. We will also be learning about the roles and responsibilities of producers and consumers. As part of this unit, we will be "selling" some of the products we are growing in our classroom gardens. We are "producers" and we will sell to some "consumers" in our school! This is a very fun project for the students!
