Literacy Workshop
When we return to lessons after Memorial Day, the students will wrap up Journeys Lesson 21. We will then jump right into Lesson 24, where they will find out how one act of kindness leads to another in the folktale, Half-Chicken. We will also learn about acts of kindness in the traditional tale, The Lion and the Mouse. These selections will be a springboard for discussing the question, “How can one event in a story be the cause of another?”
Target Vocabulary: tumbling, flung, tangled, empty, peacefully, stream, blazed, swift
Phonics Skills: Prefixes re-, un-, over-, pre-, mis-, and silent consonants
Vocabulary Strategy: Antonyms
Comprehension Skill: Cause and effect – tell how one event makes another happen
Comprehension Strategy: Visualize – picture what is happening as you read
The writing lessons will focus on the Word Study principle and Grammar rules for Lesson 24. The students will also be responding to various assignments in complete sentences and short paragraphs. The focus of these lessons include Organization; that is, having a main idea sentence, a fact followed by a detail and a closing sentence. Once their ideas are written, they are expected to reread their work to ensure their capitalization, punctuation and spelling has been checked and corrected.
As a class, we are enjoying another great book by Cynthia Rylant, Gooseberry Park. It is about a special friendship between four unlikely animals.
Math
This week, we will wrap up Chapter 14 on Time. We will then jump forward to Chapter 17, Graphs and Line Plots. Collecting, organizing, reporting, and interpreting data are important activities related to children’s everyday experiences. In First Grade, children learned how to analyze simple picture graphs and use them to answer questions. They were also taught to collect and organize data in tally charts and bar graphs. In this chapter, children will learn how to analyze more complex picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. In Grade 2, the reading, analysis and interpretation of picture graphs involves symbols that may represent more than one item. One advantage of this is that it allows symbols to stand for multiples of a number so larger numbers can be represented. As such, children will be required to connect their knowledge of multiplication and division with creating and reading of picture graphs.
Chapter 17 - Graphs and Line Plots

Social Studies
To complete Unit 4, we will discuss how the United States is only one country on a big continent in an even bigger world. It is important to learn about other countries, including where they are located. Since countries share their ideas and cultures, it is also important to know which countries are our next-door neighbors and which are further away. We will look at and read a World Map to familiarize ourselves with the many different countries who share our Earth.
Science
You can encourage your child’s curiosity at home! If you know where your nearest stream or creek is, plan a trip to go visit it! If you’re not sure, look on a map. Once you get there, ask your child if they can figure out which direction it's flowing. Use a map to see if you can figure out where the water's headed.
