Parent's Guide For School Information / November 1st

WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK: Please Complete the Parent Survey By December 1

The Platte County School District is conducting its annual parent survey to gather feedback on strengths of the district, as well as areas to consider for growth. Your input is important and will be considered when making future decisions.

If you have not already completed the survey during Parent/Teacher conferences, we ask that you complete the survey by clicking on the link below. If you have more than one student, please be sure to answer those questions for each building. The survey should take approximately fifteen minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Calling All Veterans!

The Pathfinder Elementary students and staff would like to honor members of our community who have or are currently serving in the US Armed Forces on Monday, November 11, with some specially planned activities taking place here that morning.

Our activities will begin shortly after 9 with a brief assembly in which the service men and women in attendance and his/her student(s) will be recognized and celebrated. Please arrive no later than 9:00 to be checked in. Following the assembly our celebration will continue with a cookie reception.

If you or someone in your immediate family is an active or retired member of our US Armed Forces and is able to join us in our celebration, please contact Amy Wazac at We also need a picture of that person either in uniform or with his/her Pathfinder child(ren) for the assembly. Please let us know of your plans to attend as well as submit your picture by Wednesday, November 6th.

The Giving Tree

Each year, our building social worker coordinates a holiday gift adoption program called The Giving Tree. This program specifically benefits our students whose family meets criteria for holiday assistance. Since the beginning of our Giving Tree, we have been able to make the holiday season brighter for over 400 students and families.

This program would not be possible without the support of our giving community. If you, your church or even community organization would be interested in adopting a child or family, please respond to Heather Schuller, school social worker, at After you respond, a sign up genius invitation will then be sent to you by November 20th. When you receive the sign up genius, you may choose the child, family and or items you would like to adopt and/or donate.

Open Library Night / November 5th

Our first Open Library Night is Tuesday, November 5th, and our theme is "Fall in Love with Reading." Open Library Night is a free event for Pathfinder families. This is an open house event, and you can come and go as your schedule allows.

Our Open Library Night provides an opportunity for families to:

* Make a craft

* Eat a light snack

* Check out an extra library book

* Enjoy a guest reader

* Receive a door prize

* Enter a drawing for a bigger prize such as books, posters, and more

* Most importantly this is a time for families to spend time relaxing and enjoying literacy!

Any student who attends all 4 Open Library Nights this year will be entered into a drawing for family 4-packs of tickets to local attractions.

Our guest reader for the night will be Mrs. Mindy Wheeler, instructional coach for Barry and Pathfinder.

Literary Pumpkins

Thank you to all of the students and families who participated in our literary pumpkins this school year. This is such a fun way to connect the love of literacy with the fall season! Please take a minute to check out the amazing pumpkin creations of some of our favorite book characters

October Attendance Update

We finished the month of October with an average daily attendance of 94.8% . Our goal for the school year is to maintain an average of 95% per month. We were down quite a few percentage points this month as flu season as kicked in. Here is a breakdown for how each grade did during the month of September:

Kindergarten: 94.2%

1st Grade: 94.5%

2nd Grade: 95.5%

3rd Grade: 94.8%

4th Grade: 94.9%

This is also a reminder that if your child is sick or will be absent from school, please notify the school office at 816-436-6670 to verify his or her absence. If we do not receive a phone call or message then the absence will not be verified through our attendance process.

PIRATE PRESENCE: Attendance Matters!

School success starts with students showing up. Our goal at Platte County School District is to ensure that every student attends regularly. Attending school every day improves chances of graduation, college, and success in life. We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school - regardless of the reason - it can cause them to fall academically. Students are less likely to succeed if they are chronically absent - which means missing two days every month, or 18 or more days over the course of a school year.

Attendance is taken each day. Around 10:00 a.m. each school day, an automated call will be sent to parents of students counted absent without prior notice of the absence. Let’s give our students the best chance to achieve success by helping our children get to class every day!

Pirates ROCK Character Trait: CITIZENSHIP

Pirates R.O.C.K. (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) is a program designed to surround our families with examples of strong character traits through school experiences, at home, and reinforced in their community. Each month our community focuses on a specific character trait and students are recognized for exhibiting these traits: Self Confidence, Pride, Responsibility, Citizenship, Compassion, Individuality, Self Control, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Honesty, and Cooperation.

November's #PiratesROCK trait is CITIZENSHIP: providing service and duty to your community.

Birthday Treats

Students are permitted to bring peanut-free/store-purchased treats for a celebration to share with their classmates. It would be appreciated if you inform the teacher in advance if you plan to send treats. We request treats be of a type that require minimal amounts of class time for teachers to distribute. Birthday treats will only be distributed to the class and will not be distributed throughout the school. All unused birthday treats will be sent home with the child if he or she is a car rider / Y-Club student, or disposed of if the student is a bus rider. Please do not send party invitations to school with your child. This often results in hurt feelings on the part of those students who are not invited. Deliveries to school from the flower shops for birthdays and other special occasions will be kept in the office and delivered to the student near the end of the day. All items must fit in the child’s backpack. Keep in mind that helium-filled balloons are not permitted on the bus. Deliveries need to be approved through the school administrator.

Parent/Visitor Lunch Table

Parents, in an effort to ensure that there is ample seating for our students at the classroom lunch tables, we have two new Parent Tables to be utilized when parents come to eat lunch with their child. These tables have also been implemented due to an increase in students with food allergies. Many of the allergens Pathfinder students are sensitive to are found in the foods brought in to lunch from outside restaurants, making the need for a separate setting even more apparent.

We hope this provides you with an opportunity to enjoy a more private lunch with your child and spend some quality time together. Please contact administration with any questions and thank you in advance for your partnership!

Low/Negative Lunch Balances

Parents, we just want to remind you that we no longer send out a low lunch balances call on Sunday nights. These notifications will come in the form of email on Monday and Thursday afternoons. That being said, please make sure to check your child's balance on Meals Plus at the start of each week. Thank you in advance for your help!

We are ready for any and all Watch D.O.G.S. to sign up for a slot to volunteer for this year's program. Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement, educational initiative of the National Center For Fathering.
