The motto for this week: I don't trade what I want MOST for what I want now.
Hello Parents and Guardians,
This week we focus on the ability to delay gratification. Why is this skill important? James Clear wrote a nice piece about it, you can read it here Delayed Gratification Article. The headline for the article reads:
40 Years of Stanford Research Found That People With This One Quality Are More Likely to Succeed.
That one quality is (you guessed it) the ability to delay gratification. Being able to put off immediate gratification for something more important later is a crucial component to success.
One way to help our children understand the importance of delayed gratification is to have them ask themselves, "Would this make my future-self happy?" When they think about that question, it helps them connect to what they want down the road, so they are more willing to work for it now.
For example, what would your future-self want more, stronger relationships with your kids, or another evening in front of the computer? Knowing what you want is the first step to attaining it. When you see your child making short-term decisions, help them connect to what they want MORE, rather than what they want now
I think Homer Simpson issued the best warning, "My future self? Man, I'd hate to be that guy!"
Best to you,
Danna Evans
