At the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley in East Africa at an altitude of 600m above sea level, sits the shallow mirror-surfaced lake Lake Natron, a sanctuary to thousands of flamingos. Here, next to the only active volcano in Tanzania, Oldonyo Lengai in the cool oasis adjacent to the soda flats lies Lake Natron eco-camp. It has 10 camouflaged sleeping tents and one common tent with the bar, dining and lounge area. Each tent is furnished and has its own running water, shower and compost toilet. A private path leads from each tent to a natural swimming pool in the spring-fed stream.
The Camp has been build in a unique sensitive wetland environment and it is operated as a very low impact eco-camp. There are no permanent structures, no cement bricks or wooden platforms. Tents are camouflaged for low view-shed and equipped with compost toilets. Water is manually pumped directly from the spring for bathing and run through a desalination filter for drinking.
Day 7: Masai Boma and Waterfalls
This part of the Great Rift Valley is populated by the Masai peoples. Masai bomas spread around the area, but the main central village is few kilometres away to the west at the base of the escarpment.
After breakfast drive to visit the Masai Boma near the escarpment.
Walk up Engare Sero gorge to the waterfalls. The scenery is a unique blend of arid volcanic rocks and lush tropical palms. Wear shoes that do not slip & can get wet.
Picnic at waterfalls.
Return to the camp for sunset yoga and meditation.
Dinner & overnight at the camp.
Day 8: The Great Rift Valley & Lake Natron
The beguiling lesser flamingo feed on algae found in soda lakes across eastern Africa but choose to breed almost exclusively at Lake Natron. Every evening hundreds of pink flamingos fly overhead, exposing the deep garnet feathers under their wings. The Lake Flats surrounding the waters edge contain small streams, lakes and hills that provide a variety of hospitable environments for birds that thrive in the alkali oasis. Lesser flamingos, pelicans, Egyptian geese, cape teels, herons, egrets, blacksmith pluvers, sand-grouse, maribou stalk, vultures, eagles, kites, buzzards and many other birds can be seen in this area.
Start the day with the bird walk on lake flats.
Leisure breakfast at camp.
Rest & gentle yoga practice during the day.
Lunch
At 5pm drive to visit 20.000-year-old hominid lava footprints that where discovered near the camp.
Order drinks from the bar and take a 10-minute drive to the top of nearby hill. Enjoy your sundowner overlooking the mirror-surfaced Lake Natron, the majestic Lengai and Gelai mountains and watch the sun go down behind the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley.
Dinner & traditional Masai singing and dancing at the camp by the bush fire.
