Females In Society Today
By Shondora Edwards
In the play Twelfth Night, the character Viola is a servant to Orsino. She works for him delivering messages to Lady Olivia. Viola thinks of herself as incapable which is why she decides to dress as a boy to better things.Viola thinks that she is able to complete the tasks coming her way.
"I'll serve the duke. Thou shall present me as an eunuch to him. It may be worth thy plains, for I can sing and speak to him in many sorts of music that will allow me very worth his service. What else may hap to time I will commit.Only shape thou thy silence to my wit".(I.ii.49-55).pg.3
I am a female student in high school. As a girl it might be hard to find a job based upon the kind of things that you might be doing. Like stocking the shelf's or lifting heavy items. As a teenage female I try not to seem like others. Which is what some people think that most teenage girls do. Also as a teenage girl you might get into trouble or other things which is why I keep to myself.
Viola is a female that has been in a shipwreck. Although she was of high class she now has to find a different way to do things. She decides to become a guy named Cesario so that she can work since they Lady Olivia was not taking female workers at the time. Viol is forced to act upon her gender because without her being a boy she wouldn't be able to make a living for herself. Since Viola is dressed as a boy she has her limits. Which include her not being able to tell Orsino that she loves him and telling Lady Olivia that she is not a boy.
I don't know how others see me but to be honest I really don't care. I live in a nice house in a quiet neighborhood. I go to a nice school. I guess my teachers and classmates see me as a hard worker and organized. Or at least I try to be. As the oldest girl in the house I am seen as a second mom and a role model. It is up to me to do what I have to do in order for things to get done. Like cleaning and cooking when my mom isn't feeling well. Or when I have to watch my little brother when my mom goes to school.
I believe that other characters in Twelfth Night see Viola as a gentlemen while others see her as competition. Some people like Olivia see Viola as a a handsome gentlemen and others like Sir Andrew see her as an enemy. It is different to how she sees herself because Viola didn't know that she had that kind of effect on people to where they want to fight, and marry her.
"Dear lad, believe it. For they shall yet belie thy happy years that say art thy man. Diana's lip is not more smooth and rubious. Thy small pipe is as maiden's organ, shrill and sound, and all is semblative a woman's part. I know thy constellation is right apt for this affair".(I.iv.29-36).pg.2
Similarities and Differences
The similarities between me and Viola is that we both dressed up as guys for a good cause. We both have gotten mistaken for someone that we were not.
