Guest Teacher Alert
I want to let you know that, on Wednesday, I am scheduled for surgery. This is a procedure I've had previously, and experienced a swift recovery. It is necessary for me to be out for at least the remainder of the week, but I sure would like to be back quickly, and I have both the confidence and motivation to do so. Should you have urgent messages, please send them through the office, as I will not have access to e-mail during much of that time. Thank you so much for your understanding.
100th Day of School
Can you even believe last Tuesday was our 100th Day of School? You know what they say, "Time flies when you're having fun." We've had big fun celebrating the number 100 during our math group time activities. Similarly, we've completed some creative writing prompts, "Things We've Been Told 100 Times," "When I Am 100 Years Old," and "Before I Am 100: People, Places, and Things." It's been big, big fun all week long.
Novel Studies
Our long-term study of the Iditarod lends itself perfectly to "Book Club" novel studies. Daily, students are immersed in reading different high-interest novels about sled dogs or the race. This differentiated instruction allows all students to access the same classroom curriculum by providing entry points, learning tasks, and outcomes that are tailored to students' needs. It is working beautifully! Our goals for these novel studies include the following.
- Students will develop their communication skills as they interact with the text, their peers, and their teachers.
- Students will deepen their understanding of sled dog mushing including the dog positions, equipment, and the care of sled dogs.
- Students will share about character feelings, traits, motivations, and character change.
- Students will talk about author’s craft, such as the use of similes and description.
- Students will discuss themes in the book and relate the story and themes to their own lives.
Literature selections have included The True Story of Balto, Magic Tree House: Balto of the Blue Dawn; Iditarod Dreams, Stone Fox, and Mystery on the Iditarod Trail.
