Midway Mustang Memo
April 2019
Admin Corner
Dear Parents,
It seems spring just arrived; however, now summer is around the corner! This school year is passing much too quickly! Our students continue to make us proud as they show their artwork at Art Exhibits, perform and share their musical talent, compete in math competitions, earn praise for good leader qualities, and excel in academics. They have gained in mind, body, and spirit over the year. Adopting the Leader in Me way of life has helped all of us as we learn and practice habits that support social, emotional, and academic growth.
Here is an article to help us stay Strong in Mind, Body, and Spirit regardless of the task . . .

Looking ahead to the next school year, parents can be assured that a great deal of thought and effort will go into the process of forming new classes. A variety of input will be solicited from various teachers in placing students. If you, as a parent, would like to provide further input regarding your child’s needs, please complete the form found at this link: https://forms.gle/JUEC8yzgB2JuqiBa7
This information will certainly be considered as we make our final placement decisions this summer. Information must be sent through this form no later than May 3rd.
With kind regards,
Jan Munroe, Principal
Daphne Rogers, Assistant Principal
Ashley Starr, Administrative Assistant

Counselor's Corner
As we get closer to the end of the school year and spring fever has begun. Parents, and teachers, might wonder how to keep students focused on ending the school year with a bang.
Here are 5 tips to help your child end the school year strong:
1. Set goals. What is something your child wants to accomplish at school by the end of the year?
2. Keep a consistent schedule.
3. Continue to communicate with teachers and be involved in your child’s academics.
4. Keep up with attendance. When students aren’t in school they miss important instruction and can quickly fall behind.
5. Make sure your child gets enough sleep. It’s beautiful outside and daylight is lasting longer. Often children want to stay up late. Children need 9-12 hours of sleep each night for them to be able to focus properly in school.
For more information or questions contact one of your school counselors.
Have a great day,
Dr. Collins and Ms. Driscoll, School Counselors
News from Nurse Monahan
Hopefully, with the increasing days of nice weather, our mustangs are getting outside more to enjoy the sunshine. In addition to stranger danger awareness, this is also a good time to remind them about bike safety, bike helmets and traffic laws.
More sunshine also means more chances of sunburn so don't forget to use sunscreen! Sunscreen is considered a medication so please do not send children to school with sunscreen. Teachers cannot apply it so it is best to apply it in the morning before school. If your child needs additional coverage during the day a parent must bring it in, sign a permission form and the child must report to the clinic for application.
Being outside also means more exposure to pollen, and levels are always changing. The best way to manage allergy symptoms is to take a daily allergy medication that your doctor can recommend. Washing hands, faces, and glasses after being outside or resting with a cool cloth is the extent of how the clinic can manage allergies at school.
The clinic always welcomes parents to drop off medication that may help alleviate nuisance symptoms that take children out of class. Please go to the clinic website on the Midway homepage to learn more about our medication policy, or contact me by email or phone.

Happy Spring! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful spring break with some rest & family fun. I can’t believe how rapidly our school year is winding down, but still lots of fun & learning to do! We’re “hopping” here in the Mustang Café!
April’s Harvests of the Month are mushrooms & strawberries. Mushrooms are one of the best sources of vitamin D we have. Some even call it the “sunshine vitamin” because of its exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D is important in bone structure development, so they’re great source for our kiddos growing bodies. Strawberries are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well. They’re great at helping block out free radicals that damage the body including the eyes. As we age, eating strawberries provides benefits that help protect our eyes from damage.
Mr. Dillon and his stem class harvested some yummy lettuces & kale from our hydroponic tower this month. See the pictures below. We provided these in our side salads for all to enjoy.
As we bring this year to a close, we want to remind everyone that our system will not allow any meal charges during the month of May. It will be important to keep a close eye on student’s accounts to be sure they are properly funded for meals and the extras purchases they like. If you use the mypaymentplus.com site, you can set a low-balance alert so that you can always be sure your child has the money needed for meals.
Thanks so much for all you do as parents & sharing your kids with us. We love seeing their smiling faces and having a small part of their day while here at school. As always, please contact me if I can be of any assistance. Hope your April is AWESOME!
