Chapter 4: Conducting Practicing and Deepening Lessons
"Element 11: Examining Errors in Reasoning
This element helps deepen students' understanding of content by having them examine their own reasoning or the overall logic of information presented to them. Such activities are at the core of what is referred to as college and career readiness (Conley, 2014). This makes intuitive sense in that students who are ready for college and careers have the ability to analyze their own or others' thinking. Strategies address a wide variety of ways teachers can aid students in examining their reasoning or that of others. Some of the strategies involve recognizing and rectifying specific types of errors: identifying faulty logic, errors of attack, errors of weak reference, errors of misinformation, and errors in logic. Teachers have used these strategies since the 1950s. Other strategies involve relatively new reasoning skills that have become salient in the literature since the mid-1990s. To illustrate, consider habits of mind. A habit of mind (also known as a mental disposition) is a habitual way we have of thinking in complex situations. Some habits of mind render our thinking ineffective. For example, an unproductive habit is to give up as soon as you realize you don't have an obvious or immediate solution to a problem or an answer to a question. Each unproductive habit of mind has a related productive habit of mind that renders our thinking highly efficient and effect."

We must directly teach and expect productive habits of mind every day--this is especially true for traditionally underserved populations, specifically economically disadvantaged students.
