Last Day for Challenger Enrollment
Kindergarten Enrollment
It’s Time for Kindergarten Enrollment in Rock Hill Schools
ROCK HILL – Rock Hill Schools is hosting an event on Saturday, March 11 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Rock Hill Schools district office to help families enroll their children in four-year-old and five-year-old kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year. While the first day of school is six months away, the early enrollment event can help reduce the first day jitters for both students and parents.
The drop-in event will allow families a one-stop shop to complete registration, meet school representatives, and enjoy a carnival-like atmosphere where each registered five-year-old kindergartener will receive a class of 2030 t-shirt and free shaved ice compliments of Kona Ice. Students and their families can also take pictures with area mascots, practice boarding a school bus, and sit in a Rock Hill Fire Department fire truck.
To register for kindergarten, children must be five years old on or by September 1, 2017 and must be four years old on of by September 1, 2017 for pre-kindergarten. To enroll, a parent or legal guardian is expected to provide:
- legal birth certificate,
- a current S.C. Certificate of Immunization record, and
- proof of residence.
Accepted proof of residence documents are an electric bill, gas bill, and a rental or lease agreement. The parent or legal guardian’s name and billing address of the residence must be on the document.
Rock Hill Schools offers a limited pre-kindergarten, or 4K, program. There are several options available to families depending on the child’s attendance zone.
- A half-day program is available at Central Child Development Center. Sessions are available in the morning and afternoon. Families can register at Central Child Development Center or the district office. Students will be screened in late spring and families will be notified in July if their child has been accepted.
- Children living in an attendance zone of a Title 1 school are eligible to apply to a full-day 4K program. Schools included are Belleview, Ebenezer Avenue, Finley Road, Oakdale, Rosewood and York Road. Space is limited in the full-day 4K programs. Once the program is full, applications will be considered for placement in a half-day program at Central Children Development Center.
- Two schools – The Children’s School at Sylvia Circle and Old Pointe – offer a tuition-based full-day program. Families interested in the tuition-based programs should contact the schools directly to register.

Volunteer Opportunity for Next Year (Only 2 responses...please respond!)
Before school reading or math buddies/tutors
ii. Before school psychical activity coaches (perhaps offering a 20 minute fun physical activity that aligns with the volunteer’s hobbies (e.g., run club, yoga, Zumba/dance, etc) one or two mornings a week for kids who get there early enough; if we could find people who could teach the kids yoga that’d be really great for creating more mindfulness)
iii. After school tutors for parents whose kids need tutoring but can’t afford it
iv. Garden helpers – people to help in our Ebinport school gardens
v. Volunteers to oversee an Ebinport “peace center” where kids can go for calming down and conflict resolution (this would directly align with the course Ginger is teaching)
Bus Duty Refresher
- In an effort to maintain consistency and safety on the bus lot, each grade level will be assigned a bus to monitor until that bus leaves the lot. If your bus has already loaded, please help monitor students whose bus has not yet arrived. Once ALL busses have left the lot, teachers not assigned bus duty can return to the building. Bus assignments are as follows:
- Bus 45: Kindergarten Bus 20: 4th Grade
- Bus 14: 1st grade Bus 83: 5th Grade
- Bus 76: 2nd and 3rd grade
Mental Health Tip of the Week
Teach How to Disagree Respectfully
It’s empowering for all children—especially those who struggle with authority—to know that they may disagree with adults. Of course, allowing students to disagree doesn’t mean accepting all forms of disagreement. Part of becoming a contributing member of a democratic society is learning how todisagree respectfully.
When teaching children appropriate ways to disagree, make clear that in the moment, they still need to follow directions and rules. Let them know that later they can discuss what they think was unfair and what should be changed.
Teach children safe and respectful ways to show their disagreement, such as using respectful words and phrases like “I feel that” and “I suggest,” or writing a letter to you or dropping a note into a Complaint Box. Be sure to model these methods before expecting children to use them.
Teacher Accountability Tip of the Week
When just one member of your team is late in the morning, it affects all classes. If a teacher arrives at 7:35, the teacher on duty has to wait or those students are split and placed in other classes. This does not allow time for the arriving teacher to gather him/herself and get prepared for the day. If this becomes an issue, maybe discuss it as a grade level and set your own expectations. Yes, these are difficult conversations, but ones that must take place in order for a PLC and PBIS to effectively work together. The important thing is to be professional, open, and honest.

-dismissal buses/challenger from classrooms as they arrive in the bus lot, teachers will watch in hallways and have eyes on students on the way from; K-1 will already be on the bus lot
