COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES
Do you ever struggle with how to best teach comprehension to your students? We have one of the best resources you could ever want to turn to in Jan Richardson’s The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading. In chapter seven of her book, Jan Richardson tackles the following top twelve comprehension strategies and provides a specific module with a video link for each.
1. Comprehension Monitoring – The reader is aware when meaning breaks down.
2. Retelling – The reader retells information in nonfiction and retells story elements in fiction.
3. Developing Vocabulary – The reader understand the meaning of a phrase or word.
4. Asking and Answering Questions – The reader asks and answers questions based on details in the text.
5. Identifying Main Ideas and Details – The reader is able to identify the main idea/central message and most important details.
6. Analyzing Characters – The reader can identify character traits and motives.
7. Analyzing Relationships – The reader expresses an understanding of relationships between people, events, or ideas (e.g., cause-effect or compare & contrast).
8. Inferring – The reader makes an inference or draws a conclusion from details in the text.
9. Summarizing – The reader synthesizes information and prepares a condensed account that covers the main points.
10. Evaluating – The reader understands the theme, author’s purpose, point of view, and fact vs. opinion, and gathers evidence to support the author’s point.
11. Using Text Features – The reader uses the table of contents, headings, bold words, sidebars, pictures and captions and diagrams and maps to clarify and extend his or her understanding of the topic.
12. Understanding Text Structure – The reader understands how the author organizes the information within the text: description, problem-solution, cause-effect, compare & contrast, and time order/sequence.
When you understand these strategies and how readers apply them, you will be able to teach comprehension with any text. They’re essential for students to learn and important for teachers to teach, and they produce powerful results. Copies of The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading can be found in the reading room. If you’re not using this resource you and your kids are missing out!
