Mason Moose Minutes January 7
Teamwork it is! One Mason, One Family, One Team!
Message from the Principal
Dearest Mason Families,
Happy Friday and Happy New Year once again! It truly was great to see everyone come back from the break! We started the week at Mason with the Monday read aloud titled, Love the World, by Todd Parr. Students learned the importance of loving so many things in life, which included loving themselves, the world, and each other. This book allowed us to reinforce the importance of us all to value who we are, along with the importance of being kind and caring to one another! Throughout the week, classroom teachers and I were able to present the Leaders of the Month in alignment with the Leader In Me traits. Students nominated were presented with a certificate and lanyard to wear proudly throughout the month! Additionally, their picture will be placed on the Leaders of the Month Wall!
I would like to remind all families that the Mason team continues to work hard to ensure that all COVID protocols and mitigation efforts are in place. With the rise of COVID-19 cases, we encourage families to have their student stay home if they are experiencing 2 or more of the symptoms as noted in the COVID-19 Screening Tool for Families. Please be kindly reminded that GPPSS is following the new quarantine guidelines from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHSS). For your reference, feel free to review the recently released new guidelines regarding quarantine protocols within a school setting. GPPSS will be using the “Test to Stay” strategy for unvaccinated students who are considered close contacts within the school setting. Fully vaccinated close contacts who are not experiencing symptoms do not need to test or quarantine. Additionally, kindly be reminded if your student is fully vaccinated, please upload your student's vaccine card using the MiStar Parent Portal. The directions are provided below in the newsletter for your reference if needed.
We continue to move forward as One Mason, One Family, One Team! If you need anything, please feel free to contact me via email at Hassana@gpschools.org or (313) 432-4404. As always....Teamwork it is! Together we learn, we lead, and we lift!

Communities United in Diversity 1/19 at Maire
The next Communities United in Diversity meeting is Wednesday, January 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the library at Maire Elementary.
New members are welcome! Come for just one hour or stay for two. The first hour of the meeting will be focused on a learning community with Ginni Winters, Wayne RESA’s school culture and climate consultant. Ginni will share an activity or presentation and resources and generate lively discussion among participants on issues relevant to students in the Grosse Pointe Public School System.
The second hour of the meeting will allow participants to break into their subcommittees -- learning, action, and communication -- and continue their work to advance diversity initiatives in the district.
Whether you have come in the past or this is the first time, bring a friend. Please share this meeting date on your own social media channels to help us get the word out.
Childcare will be provided by our own National Honor Society students. Please use the entry double doors on the right side of the parking lot near Cadieux and Waterloo. Contact Lisa Rheaume at rheauml@gpschools.org or Roy Bishop at bishopr@gpschools.org with questions.
Dinner Conversation Topics
How can I love myself, my family, and the world?
How have I shown acts of kindness?
What is something I learned new this week?
Volunteers
We love our volunteers! If you are interested in coming to Mason and volunteering, please reach out to the main office!
An IChat needs to be filled out and processed 24hrs prior to volunteering at school. If one is needed, we can send one home with your student or you can pick one up from the office.
To all of our dear parents who have been joining us, know that YOU and your time is truly appreciated! Your presence is making a difference and your involvement is so valuable!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Cindy Lyon in the main office at 313-432-4411.
Morning Arrival & Dismissal Reminders
* Students should not be playing at the playground in the morning or on the blacktop. Please kindly remind your student.
* Please DO NOT PARK, nor double park on Charlevoix Rd as this is a drop off area during morning arrival and dismissal times. We want to be proactive about this so that parents are not ticketed for parking there, and students are safe to be dropped off.
* Additionally, during morning arrival, let us try to park in the parking spots which tend to be available if you intend to walk your child to the blacktop, and please DO NOT PARK in the drop off circle so that it indeed is a drop off circle for all students to be dropped off safely.
Winter Playground Procedures/Rules
Snow is here!!! Please remember our students do go outside twice a day for recess. It is important that they are dressed appropriately, hat, gloves, coat, snow pants and boots. Kindly know that in order for students to play on the playground/woodchips/field they need to HAVE snow pants and boots on. If they do not have boots or snow pants on, they will have to stay on the blacktop. Please find these Winter Playground Procedures/Rules to review with your student at home.
If you are in need of a winter jacket and need some support, please contact the main office as we do have some winter jackets to share with students in need.
Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)
Dear GPPSS Families,
The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is funded by the State of Michigan to provide free preschool for eligible four-year-old children. Head Start is federally funded to serve eligible children ages three through five years old. The Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, in collaboration with GPPSS, developed a community interest survey to elicit information regarding housing a Head Start and/or GSRP program for the 2022-23 school year at Ferry Elementary.
Eligibility for GSRP and Head Start is prioritized based on income and other factors. A family of 4 can earn up to $26,200 for Head Start or $65,500 for GSRP to be eligible for the respective programs.
We are asking that income eligible families, with children who will be three through five years old next school year, complete this survey provided by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. If there is interest in Head Start and GSRP, then Wayne Metro will start the recruitment and enrollment process for the program in the spring/summer.
The survey will be open through January 14, 2022.
