Updates from our Title III Coach-Ricardo Melendez
STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello colleagues,
Kudos to everyone! We have made it to the last leg of the race. We’ve got this!
One of Malabar’s STEAM Instructional Expectations for 2021-2022 is:
Engage in scientific inquiry by asking and answering questions to promote science and engineering practices.
Last week’s PD was all about diving into the Amp Sci engineering unit for your grade level. As we become more familiar with our Amp Sci materials and the connection to the Science and Engineering Practices, I would like to share a link to a short chapter on the SEP’s and the engineering design process. Dimension 1: Science and Engineering Practices
As always, if you have any questions or need support, please shoot me an email, or come by Room 5.
Saturday PD/Planning for Teachers-March 19-9:00-12:00 p.m. Focus: Planning for Amplify Science
Planning for Interventions
After-School for English Learners: We are currently conducting after-school intervention for our English Learners. We are preparing students for ELPAC coming in April. This intervention is Malabar sponsored.
After-School Intervention in Writing: We are targeting students in grades 3-6 preparing them for SBAC writing. All students will take the IAB Brief Writes assessment so we can select students to participate in this intervention. This intervention will begin at the end of March. Students selected for this intervention will be at the strategic level.
After-School Intervention in Math: We are targeting students in grades 3-6 preparing them for SBAC math. All students will take the IAB Fractions assessment so we can select students to participate in this intervention. This intervention will begin at the end of April. Students selected for this intervention will be at the strategic level.
Springboard (District Sponsored): This intervention will target students K-3 in the area of Literacy. The intervention begins in March and ends in May. Vanessa is leading the charge with this intervention. We will be selecting intensive students to participate in this intervention.
Book Nook (District Sponsored): Book Nook is a virtual intervention for 75 Malabar students. The focus is on literacy. Students will be meeting virtually with their tutor 4 times a week. All grades are eligible to participate. Focus will be on strategic students. Ms. Alma Marquez is organizing this intervention for students.
Let's all work together to ensure that our students take advantage of this extra time to learn!
Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questions
Effective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
This week the focus will be on Literacy Academies. Our instructional expectations for literacy academies are the following:
- Teacher will be working with a small group of students targeting a specific skill.
- Students should be grouped by target skill.
- Progress monitoring should be evident.
- Independent work should support target skill for the student.
- Students should be using online platforms to monitor student comprehension and increase fluency such as ReadWorks, Raz kids, Amplify Reading, ReadTheory.
Please reach out to Lisa or Vanessa for any assistance.
